Personally I would wait until he is closer to 8 or 9 months. Consider this. He was born just 16 weeks ago, he has likely had 3 rounds of live vaccines 15 to 21 live viruses injected into him, possibly had a rabies vaccine, been started on heartworm and maybe flea and tick topicals and likely a kibble diet.. All these things by 16 weeks and now you are going to toss him under anethesia too and the vet will likely give you some pain meds or antibiotics... Isn't this sounding like a red flag to anyone in the way we are supposd to do all this crap to a puppy who is desperately trying to build up his immune system? If I were you, I'd be worried too. It sounds like you are a very responsible owner. I think your fears are warranted even though you didn't really know why. Go with your gut on this and call it off. Reschedule in a few months. Give this dog some time to adjust to everything he has been subjected to since he first saw the day of light such a short time ago.
This might not be the most popular answer with many of the people here but I have seen more then one dogs health wrecked for life with this type of an assault on a puppy.
Good luck!
And yes... MANY dogs have no problems. But just as many do. all that is done to the pup sets him up for a possible life of allergies, digestive disorders, skin problems, cancer, death.. if you don't believe it... instead of givng the thumbs down.. how about some research on the subject! Iv'e already done my homework.

My sister breeds chis and she has had several fixed with no problem. Is your vet experienced with the small breeds. I although wouldn't get it done till 5 1/2 -6 months 4 months is very young. and that way it can put on more weight.
the standard for a chi is 5- 7 pound and if it's 4.4 pound it will prob be about a 5 or more pound dog and anotehr reason to wait until 6 months.
Good Luck and usually fine but as any surgery there is always a chance something can go wrong.

We have had lots of puppies spayed/neutered.. Knock on wood, we have never had one with a bad reaction, or have a problem with the surgery. No complications with the anesthesia or infection or anything else..
When you get home that day, start out feeding him slowly.. Little tiny bits of food. He'll have had an antibiotic shot likely, so wait a few hours after you get home and give him some plain yogurt. The kind with 2 live bacterial cultures..
In his drinking water, put 1 tsp of Braggs applecider vinegar. This boosts the immune system, and helps to rinse the body of the anesthesia.. Get the Braggs at your healthfood store.

Oh girl He will be fine! I was terribly worried about my poor little chi when I adopted him. He was a year old, And 5lbs. so skinny. I was worried it'd be too much for his little body. But when I brought him home (haha) He was a bolt of energy, you could not tell he had even had it done. He was (trying) to jump on and off beds! I wouldn't allow it...I was afraid his little stitch would come out. Poor thing. But he was happy and doing great after less than a day. But Please don't do this to your puppy at 4mos. old. I know you want to be responsible and get it done...Just wait until he is a year or a little under. He is so young..I hope everything goes well. You 2 are in my prayers. good luck to you :)

My experiance with this is good, I have had dogs, cats and rabbit neutered and never any complications in either and the rabbits are only a couple a pounds.
I also found this website that told me some things about the use and findings about different types and methods of anethesia.

Don't worry I had this conversation with my friend just yesterday. She is having her 31/2 pound Chihuahua female spayed next week. If it will make you feel better just ask the vet's hospital if they do a lot of toy breeds. I'm sure they'll say yes, because so many of them are neutered & spayed everyday. Your dog will be so much happier & healther after it's done. You are doing a good thing for both of you so feel good about it and warm your feet up all will be well. Take care;^)

I know how you feel. When my animals have to " go under" I worry until I see them again. A very good vet will not let anything happen to him. Its the vet you need to first trust. A vet knows how much of the stuff they are suppose to give by the weight. If you want-- ask how long you can wait before you have to have him neutered. My tyler was only about 2 pounds at 3 months. So I do know how you feel. My advice----Please Please check your vet out. Good luck

I have assisted in neutering dogs for the past four years and we haven't lost one yet. The anaesthetic used in veterinary surgeries is very safe.
Some vets will offer a pre-anaesthetic blood test to make sure that the liver and kidneys are functioning fine and will be able to process the anaesthetic. If your vet offers it, then I would definitely get it done. It also gives your vet the normal blood levels for your dog in case your dog gets sick during its life.
Neutering also ensures that your dog's life won't be cut short by testicular cancer and prostate problems, so it is important to get it done.
We have neutered small breed dogs as young as eight weeks old, so your dog is definitely old enough for the procedure.

Be brave. You are dong the right thing. I went through the same fear recently when I had a mass removed from my dog's leg.
Trust your vet. This is a routine procedure. They could do it in their sleep. As far as the anaesthesia, there are risks, just like any surgery, but they are minimal compared to the major benefits of this surgery. You are doing the right thing and of course you are going to be nervous, your baby is having surgery.
I am sending your supportive thoughts.
Good Luck

Don't worry he will be fine - make sure your vet is reputable and the surgery is clean - ask other clients what they think of the vet.
We just had both our pups done about 8 weeks ago and my wife was scared like you are, however everything worked out fine. We had to get them done because they are brother and sister and they started to play hump each other. Good luck...
