AirTran is one of the most cash-rich airlines in the industry today. Formerly ValuJet, the company experienced a terrible PR setback when a contractor loaded some oxygen tanks (a big no-no) on one of their planes and then it exploded midair and caused the plane to crash in the Florida Everglades.

The company had so much money that it went out and bought another airline, AirTran, so it could assume a new name.

Now, AirTran is attempting to purchase another airline, Midwest Airlines (which is famous for it's baked-on-board chocolate chip cookies and it's all-first-class seating).

Usually a company that has a lot of money like that is in that position because its doing a good job. It's eating Delta's lunch in Atlanta, and controls about 8% of the market in Orlando (no small feat!).

I've flown them on occasion and have never had a bad experience.

It's one of those no frills low fare airlines, so it's basic service, but the prices are great. I am flying from Buffalo to Raleigh in July and Air Tran had a round trip flight for less than $138, but it had a connection in Atlanta, and that's the only reason I didn't go with Air Tran.

I've flown them before and didn't have a problem. They have free XM radio, which is nice.

This is the airline that was in the news a few months ago for throwing a screaming toddler and her parents off a plane. You can take that as a good thing or a bad thing. ;-)

Hello, I have worked for a major airline for over 21 yrs and we in the airline business consider Airtran not a safe bet for travel...not reliable or professional...I would not fly on them...but, if you are only going for a non-stop round trip, than if the price is right, go for it. Never fly them when multiple stops are required, and never thru Atlanta. Use travelocity, one step, and orbitz for locating best prices, also Southwest. Southwest is not included in any travel search engine, you must use their own site. The best carriers are United, American, Delta, Southwest...the worst-Airtran.

I hope so cause I'm going to Florida next month with them. they are letting my dog ride on my lap for free because she has a therapy license. AND they were very cheap. Four of us are going from Philadlephia to Flofor less than 400.00 total round trip.

They are! They just skimp on the refreshments, but at the low prices you pay, I think that can be overlooked!
