I believe that this is a tenant of Pentecostalism. Girls should refrain from cutting their hair, and once the reach adulthood they are expected to wear it up. They are also encouraged to wear strictly modest skirts and dresses.

Whoa. .what a topic? , seems that many people replied eh?..hehe..
very well, you placed it here in religion & spirituality topic so I suppose this is the thing you want to know?..
"ORTHODOX JEWISH WOMEN" aren’t allowed to show their hair publicly after they are married, so many in the U.S. simply buy wigs, often wigs made in India which is really from human hair.
lol..sounds that they used wigs as an excuse then right..? so>.
some Orthodox rabbis (or in other words, teachers or spiritual leaders) decided to ban these wigs as well (but not for the obvious reason), sending Orthodox "wig-wearers" into some sort of fuss.
Article from The New York Times (by:Daniel J. Wakin):
"The rabbis said the hair may have been used in Hindu religious ceremonies, which like other pantheistic practices are considered idolatrous in Orthodox teaching. As a result, many of the women felt obliged to put aside their costly wigs, flocking instead to stores that sold acceptable replacements. ... The modesty regulations have given rise to a thriving Brooklyn trade in wigs, along streets like 13th Avenue in Borough Park. Wigs of human hair are particularly prized, and can cost several thousand dollars. They not only look better, some women say, but they also last longer.
It’s interesting that the ban is not because the wearing of any wigs, and especially human-hair wigs, violates the spirit of the law (designed to protect a woman’s modesty) — it’s because it’s unclear what was in the minds of those cutting the hair off of women in the first place. So if a barber thinks the wrong thoughts, the wig isn’t licit - but if the wearer thinks the wrong thoughts (by wearing a wig in order to look more attractive), the wig is licit."
haha..
the fact about religion's influence to their hair..lol..=p...
----------------------------------------------
in short,
Orthodox jewish women and its religion thinks that they and their girls should never cut their hair.
hope that helps..

The Bible is clear that women should look like women and men should look like men. However, I don't think that a woman needs to have hair down to her ankles in order to look like a woman. I think that it all depends on her life style and how practical it is. I used to have hair down to my waist but I cut it to shoulder length because I have very thick curly hair and it was just taking me too long to comb it out in the morning and get to work on time. Either the hair had to go or the job had to go and since my husband is disabled and can't work the hair had to be sacrificed a little. But I still look very much like a woman. The Bible does not say that it is a sin for a woman to cut her hair. It simply says that it is a glory to her if she does have long hair. But, it is also not my place to judge any one and every woman has to judge that for herself.

I was never allowed to cut my hair growing up; when I stood up, it reached to my knees. I have so many split ends because of it that they'll never be completely gone. When I finally got my hair cut at the age of 14, it was a huge relief. I've kept my hair shoulder length since then and will never have long hair again!

I've met a few hardcore Pentecostals with those beliefs. Personally, I strongly prefer long hair on women, but I'd certainly never tell them what to do. It's their hair, after all.

That would actually be unhealthy, the sheer weight of the hair would cause the poor girl to have terrible headaches.

Not me. My girls get gum in their hair, or other questionable substances that won't come out with regular washing...They get it cut out.
