Rather than cash, how about a gift certificate?
If the grad is planning on moving to a college campus in the fall, then a gift certificate to IKEA, Bed, Bath & Beyond, or even Wal-Mart may be a good, practical gift. College freshmen need lots of stuff, and a store gift card gives them the freedom to buy what they need. Plus, the way I see it, you'd be doing a nice gesture for the girl as well as her parents. Every little bit helps.
If she is not moving away, then a gift certificate to her favorite hobby or sport shoppe would also work. And if she is like most teens, you can't go wrong with clothing or cd stores. My nieces like Old Navy-- $50 there buys a lot of stuff..

You should get them a $50 Visa gift card from the bank that way they can use it anywhere. They could get the book and have some money left to get a gallon of gas for the trip. Ok a 1/2 gallon of gas.

the $50... only because I am betting the last thing a high school grad wants to look at is a book!

You could compromise, and give her the book with a $30 check slipped inside.

i love the e book theory, esp if it provides a particular meaning... i gave a e book like that as a present and that i also wrote a lengthy letter interior the front cover.. its personal, and perchance she will be in a position to take it to school w/ her.. all and sundry can in basic terms provide $$
