I am a regular 5K racer and I too worry about vomiting.
Here's my general rule for eating before a race:
Assuming a race starts at 8AM, I get up three hours before hand. I eat a very small breakfast. Perhaps 1 cup cooked oatmeal or some cream of wheat. Just enough to satisfy my hunger, but definitely not completely full.
I'll also drink 8 - 16 ounces of Gatorade or sports drink at this point. I want to be urinating clearly by the race's start.
After that point, I do not eat anything. If I am hungry, I might have a very very small piece of fruit or a small bit of an energy bar. I'll sip on gatorade as well or some diet green tea (but not too much).
I prefer to race with a near empty stomach. I've come close to getting sick at the finish line if I've had too much food. You do need to eat something before a race, though, particularly if you are concerned about performance as your body will run on the glucose you eat for breakfast.
If you are simply running to train (but you aren't going to push it), you can eat a small amount 30 minutes before working out or go without food (just don't expect top performance since your body will be depleted of glucose).
The other answerer who reported that you'd get diabetes from running on empty stomach is wrong. I've never read anything of that nature. You get diabetes when your body can no longer produce insulin to digest glucose. You may get light headed or low blood sugar levels but you will not get diabetes from exercising on an empty stomach.
Good luck.

5K is a short run. Eat carbs such as pasta the night before. You may try some sports drink or something in the morning. Obviously proper hydration begins 48 hours BEFORE the event. If your urine isn't near clear that'd be bad. I run 3-7 miles 5 days a week, usually in the mornings. I've found not eating has no effect and eating depending on how acidic and hard to digest the food is can have horrid effects.

How lengthy is your run? Eat part a work of vigor bar, now not a complete breakfast meal. Because in case your run is simply too lengthy, you can begin to battle, in an bad method and you would be feeling such as you simply desire to give up. Eating that small snack earlier than could make it pass for much longer, and make you extra energized. And then devour your breakfast.

Yes! Eat carbs for energy, but do it like an hour before. Don't eat TOO much, but don't go on an empty stomach.
