England never had any intention of converting anybody to or from any religion. They believe in religious tolerance and therefore are happy to encourage the locals to worship however they choose.

The English really didn't care about religion in the colonies. England's colonies were primarilly for economic or penal purposes. It was the Spanish that were interested in converting everyone they encountered. Plus even if they wanted to, the English wouldn't have been very good at it. The Spanish were used to encountering religions differing from their own because of the Moor occupation of Spain. England is on an island, and they didn't really encounter other religions. So they were kinda freaked out by people different from them and probably wouldn't have been capable of the subversive tactics required to convert an entire civilization.

Dear Friend : Fundamentally, Hinduism is the strongest religion culturally and philosophically in the world having ramifications of ritualistic precedence. That is the main reason, other religions could not impress upon the intelligentsia and the common populace of this country. The basic principle is that wherever there is a vacuum of ideology or philosophy or strong belief, other thoughts get filled in by default on first come first served basis. However, modern education and eroding ethical values of vedic wisdom may prove to be a threat in the long run. As long as the philosophy of the religion is sound and consistent preaching is on, there would be no major negative impact on Hinduism. The real threat is actually from our own ignorant people (Not of academic education but of our own ancient vedic thoughts). Moreover, ever exploding population of a particular community in geometric proportion too may be a matter of concern in coming decades. One has to be very cautious and alert. According to a study report of a leading spiritual organisation, Islam in its present form cannot withstand more than 500 years and Christianity 500-750 years. Both would have to be reduced to zero and a new religion having base in both modern and ancient science would emerge as a world religion. The essence of Sanatan Dharma (Not the present form of Hinduism) would invariably be victorious. Christianity has more shelf life as it is rich in the Bhakti Yoga of vedic school of thoughts.

Mostly in India there are Hindu people, although many are Muslim. My husband's family is from South India, and they have all been Episcopalian for four generations.

British colonys created for markets. Hemp fiber was exploited from the 'Hindus'. They took opium and sold it in China.

They caused civil wars among groups like Sikhs and Hindus over Kashmir as early as 1856 to exploit markets.

Somehow, I don't think this is what you want to hear...so ignore this information

Most of the people in India were Hindu. Not Muslim.

Once indoctrinated (almost) always indoctrinated.

But aren't Indians almost all Hindus and Sikhs?
