Lori,

I do not know what state your girlfriend is in, however, in California there is a victims aid program that was established (sort of like a government subsidized insurance program) to assist victims of crime. The amount may only be $5000 or less, but it is a start.

There are so many programs that can be researched. I would assist her by doing some of the investigations. Try United Way, and groups such as that. Also, fund raisers can be set up in local churches or even companies where the employees attempt to raise money in order to help someone in their local community.

Finally, all insurance companies deny over 90% of all claims the first time submitted. It is almost an unspoken policy. Tell your girlfriend to file every single appeal in a timely basis to her insurance. There are yahoo groups that deal specifically with insurance companies and can advise how to keep protesting until things are approved.

Finally, do a search on prosthetic limbs. Get the names of as many manufactures as is possible. Help your friend write up a form letter outlining what occured and her need for some assistance in being fitted for a prosthetic device. She can volunteer to try out experimental models etc. and/or can see if they have any programs to help those underinsured people in need.

I will send some prayers up that your girlfriend get the help she needs, but already, I know she has the most important thing, and that is a loyal and caring friend like you!

Hugs,
Theresa

Prosthetics are expensive. They're a lot more expensive, though, if you need an artificial knee. So your friend doesn't have it as bad as she might think (I lost my leg above the knee when I was 12). I get my legs through Hanger Prosthetics and Orthotics. They're a really good company, I've been with them for years. www.hanger.com Their website should have some more info for you, since I'm not entirely sure of the cost.
