Weight gain is something that isn't easy to do and you probably know this already. I know first hand because it is something I have to do every day. I am an ectomorph by genetics, which is the "skinny body type" and the one with the fast metabolism which makes gaining so hard for guys like me. The key to weight gain is to do everything BIG. You have to eat big, to lift big, to get big. Say that over and over again in your head until you fully understand it. A lot of people think weightlifting is the key to gaining weight, and I won't argue, it is an extremely important part. BUT, there is another thing that is just as important when it comes to how to gain weight, and that is your diet.
So, to put it as simply as possible, there are 5 simple steps to how to gain weight, and here they are:
1) Count how many calories you eat in a normal day. Don't change anything, just eat like you normally would and count how many calories you consumed. This is an extremely important step, so try to be as exact as possible. Also, weigh yourself.
2) Starting the day after you counted calories, eat 500 calories MORE then you normally do. So, lets pretend that the day you counted calories you counted 2000. For the rest of the week, you would now eat 2500 calories a day. Instead of eating 3 big meals a day or eating all day all the time, spread those calories out over 5-6 smaller meals. Eat one meal every 2 and a half to 3 hours. To get big, you have to eat big! Remember that.
3) Weightlifting! Get in the gym and lift! This is another important step to how to gain weight, so make sure you are doing it correctly.
4) At the end of that week, weigh yourself. You'll notice you're gaining just after one week! Now, don't expect to see a 10lb increase. Gaining anymore then 1 or 2 pounds a week is unhealthy and means you're putting on way to much fat. So look for 1 or 2 pound gains at the end of the week. Don't sound like much? You can be gaining 5-8 pounds a month!
5) Heres an important one. At some point, you will stop seeing weight gain. At this point, you will have to eat even more. So, when you stop gaining for at least 2 weeks, it means it is time to start eating an extra 250 calories a day. Every time you see you haven't gained weight for at least 2 weeks, add an extra 250 calories.
But don't try too hard, I think you're perfect just the way you are!!!

My son had weight problems when he was about a year old. He has a hard time gaining weight. He's only in the 5th persentile for his age. His Pediatrician told me to feed him a lot of high fat and protien foods like dannon yogurt, cream cheese, there was also a kind of cheese that is in a wheel shape cut into wedges, I can't think of the name of it, but I am pretty sure it had a cow on it. I'd eat bacon and eggs and toast or sausage for breakfat and Don't snack during the day! Eating 4-6 meals a day that are smaller in portion is a better way to lose weight. Eat 3 medium to big meals a day and a late night meal or snack is great for gaining weight because you go to bed and your body can't burn off the calories like it can in the daytime. Juice is also a great alternative to water or soda (you should still drink water) but Juice is loaded with calories. When I was pregnant I didn't know that and gained a ton of weight! My doctor told me that after it was a little too late! But anyway, cheese products, and meats high in protien, juices, and yogurts are a good way to go. I hope this has helped and good luck. Remember that beauty is only skin deep but who you are on the inside is what counts the most!

Try eating right before you sleep. A lot of people have gained weight that way. Try to stay in health, but eat every meal you are offered. Try eating some snacks in between your meals. You could also try weightlifting and gain some muscle. Muscle weighs more than fat does. Eat a lot of things with protein in it. Try drinking a protein shake, it doesn't taste bad. Get lots of rest, and don't stress yourself. If you feel kind of crummy, eat some food. Those are some options.

I've also had problems with being underweight. I started drinking protein shakes and doing weights at the gym. I also eat 6 meals a day. I'm pregnant at the moment so I don't drink protein shakes anymore, however I still eat alot of food high in protein and have continued doing my weights at the gym. Good luck and I hope you find your "ideal" weight".

Do muscle-building exercises, like running with small weights on your legs- this will make your legs more muscular, so they'll appear bigger but still be toned and healthy looking. Counter that loss of calories by eating lots and lots of 'good fats', like lots of nuts, especially peanut butter. Olive oil, canola oil, fish/other seafood and corn also have good fats. These could help you bulk up while not making you unhealthy.
Good luck :]

Many teenagers are very thin, but they put on weight automatically as they grow older. This is because teens have a very high metabolic rate and burn calories fast. So teenagers should not try to put on weight by eating fatty food, since it is difficult to lose this fat later. I found this information at http://www.toloseweight.org/gainweight.html
