Many chihuahuas are "one-owner" dogs....they bond mainly to one and only one person and are highly protective in nature. Dogs that act this way (and many breeds do, including our Labrador mixes), bark when they perceive something or someone to be tresspassing on "their" property, which basically extends far beyond the fenceline to about as far as they can see.
If the hair is standing up and they are barking, look at the tail. Is it up and wagging at the same time they are barking? Or, is the tail down and the dog looks like he wants a chunk of fresh leg?
You have to look at the entire behavior, not just the barking, to decide why the animal reacts a certain way.

Some dogs do bark more than others. Usually beacause they feel something is a threat. They hear a noise (that you probably don't hear) and begin barking like mad. There is a way to stop the barking (without yelling, hitting or spraying them with water). You have to put the bark on cue which means, teach them when it is appropriate to bark. First, you need lots of treats (little treats, like cut up hot dogs, or hard treats broken in little pieces). Get the dogs attention, try to get the dog to bark while giving the cue "speak" (not while there is anything distracting going on). When he speaks, give a reward. Keep doing this until he can speak on cue fluently. Once the dog can speak on cue, you can teach the "quiet" cue. Again have a bunch of treats when doing this. Get the dog to speak. When he stops, say "quiet", praise and reward. Keep doing this - cue the speak, cue the quiet. Now give him a reason to bark. Have someone ring the doorbell. When the barking starts, cue the quiet. If it is not quiet, be patient. Wait for a quiet moment, praise and reward. Do it again until they can stop barking immediately upon request. This take lots of patience, but does work. And then you can avoid the yelling, hitting, scruff shakes, water spraying, or anything else that involves force. Good luck.

certain chihuahuas are known for being very sturdy guard canines even even with the reality that they are so tiny. they're very territorial even the female ones and bark at any intruders (or who they imagine are intruders) My Nan's chihuahua has even scared off a burglar. So in basic terms enable him save on barking like loopy it's going to warn human beings you've a dogs on your premises a good number of little canines have a huge dogs on the interior.

I also have a Chihuahua, but she doesn't bark. Remember, dogs have better hearing than us so maybe they hear things that hurt their ears. Or the might want attention from you.

Well I heard they are barky little dogs but mine barley barks. I took mine to puppy obedience course and to the older dog class I also bring him everywhere so he sees alot of stuff. I think that is why he isn't phased by stuff enough to bark.
