I would have to say that Judo and Tae Kwon Do are the most common in the world, based almost only on the fact that they're olympic sports. not only that, but there are more international competions for the two martial arts.

The techniques and, in most cases, the strategies are effective. However, a lot of the training methods are less than ideal. Kicking and punching the air for instance, or chambering the hand for no purpose. Using certain techniques as "blocks" when, in fact, they're not. Because of that, 90% of "traditional" martial arts schools will produce people who are less able to handle a real situation than those who train in a more realistic manner. A well-trained "traditional" martial artist could probably defeat an athletic individual with no training. In fact, it's almost certain.

It is ground fighting. Nearly every culture and martial art has some ground fighting technique. Roman-Greco wrestling is taught throughout the Western world within many school systems, and introduced via PE classes. In the East many of the martial arts rely heavily (jujutsu, judo, sambo, etc...) or have elements of ground fighting i.e. ne waza. Every military in the world has ground fighting as the first staple of technical know how beyond firearms. Then comes striking, kicking, and non-firearm weapons. You can see that this takes the distances (except firearms) from closest to farthest from opponents. This is because the most likely scenario you will find yourself in is grappling on the ground with your opponent. This is because mastery of controlling aggresive oppenents at a distance requires more skill.

I would have to say I think that it is TKD. I have no like for the art, but from what I've seen I'd say it is the art that is most "populated". It is very popular, that much is true. That is the art that I see the most schools. I can't say Karate because there are tons of styles and I think karate is a generic word for alot of japans arts.

Most likely it would be Karate (Open hand and the way; way of the open palm). Being popular throughout Asia and North America it may also be the most publicized. Though other martial arts a performed in dojo's and in movies, not everyone knows the names, like Jujitsu or Akido .

gun fu.
I would be willing to bet that if you add up all the soldiers and reservists in every country's military. all the militant group nut-jobs and arab terrorists and all the private gun owners then they far far outnumber the people who train in ALL unarmed martial arts combined INCLUDING BOXING.
