They will be poor qauilty puppy mill dogs that will no doubt have health and/or bahaviour issues all through it's life. Almost all of pet store puppies come from puppy mills and back yard breeders.
Either find a good breeder in your area or try petfinder or your local shelter.

Right. Great breeders put so much time and effort into their puppies, work hard to prove their dogs breed worthy, spend all the money doing proper health testing, whelp and raise the litter only to hand it over to a pet store to sell where anyone with cash or a credit card can walk out with the puppy. Not to mention, allowing their pups to spend crucial socialization and developmental stages in a cage in a pet store. But you are right, not all pet store puppies come from puppymills. The owner of the small pet store here simply cruises the internet and newspaper ads for cheap or unwanted puppies or pups from BYBs and sells them back to the public at an inflated cost, often with a fancy designer dog name. Bottomline, no good breeder ever sells their pups in a pet store. -------------- Are you aware of the developmental stages of puppies and what kind of effect living in a pet store during this time can have on a dog? Julie you are so right. --------------- Apparently you know nothing about AKC or registration. It does not mean that any of the dogs were ever in a show. AKC is a registry, they keep track of records, that is it. All it proves is the dog is purebred (and that can be questionable). Good breeders strive to prevent their pet quality dogs from being bred, but it is not always possible. The fact that a dog from a show breeder ended up breeding does not necessarily mean that the breeder was unethical, it means the owner may have been. ------------ I like that you choose to ignore some parts of the argument against what you do. So how exactly do you screen people who buy the pups to ensure they only go to good homes? Is it the good ones only use Mastercard? Or the ones who buy lots of acessories from your store?

Any dog that you buy from a pet store or puppy store comes from a puppy-mill. Puppy-mills only concern is how much money they can make and a pet store's only concern is selling the puppy to make money.
If you are really concerned about getting a healthy (or as healthy as is can be) puppy, then log on to the AKC website and look for a breeder there.
Better yet, why not go to www.petfinder.com and do a search for Pomeranian. You may find a puppy or an adult that needs a home that was either abandoned, thrown away or neglected that is very much in need of a home. These animal rescues care nothing of money, and only act in the best interest of the pet and finding a loving home.

DO NOT EVER BUY A PUPPY FROM A PET STORE!!
Dog only or not, the breeders of these dogs do not care if the dogs are well loved or nice pets. All they care about is making money.
Please consider a rescue, or find a quality breeder in your area. If you can't find a quality breeder close to you, consider having a puppy shipped to you.
My best friend bought a puppy from a puppy mill, just because she wanted a particular color. Her dog is five years old (her breed is supposed to live to fifteen or twenty) and she has a genetic thyroid problem and a genetic retina disorder-she is completely blind and morbidly obese and it could have been prevented by simply screening the parents! This has caused much grief to my friend as she watches her dog walk into walls, begin to cry when she can't see her, and get lost in her backyard. She will literally wander around the backyard for HOURS looking for the dog door!
Don't let this happen to you!!

If you do decide to buy from a puppymill which is a risky idea. I would look at the AKC standards for the breed then compare the standards to the puppies at the store so you have an idea on certain characteristics of the breed to look for when buying a puppy. In a alot of puppymills there is a alot of inbreeding too that you need to consider. Are you going to get a good and healthy pup? I thought about buying my chihuahua from this placed called the puppyplace, but then I decided to go with a breeder at least I knew what I was going to get for my money and the sire and dam were on sight too. The breeder was a little bit more high but I know that I got what I was wanting in a Chihuahua and one who was well taken care of before I got him also. If you do buy a pom you need to take it to the vet right after you buy it just for a checkup to make sure it has no problems. Usually if you buy from a breeder it is in the contract that you have to take it to the vet within 24-48 hours after you brought in home, and if you don't than you will not get your money back if something happens to your pup. Good Luck with your Pom. I hoped I helped

You should never buy a puppy from a pet store. Their puppies come from puppy mills where they crank out puppies all the time, and they are usually poor quality. You should always go to a reputable, professional breeder, one whose primary interest is in improving the breed, not the money. Never get a puppy from a "backyard breeder", either - people who breed their dogs just because they happen to have a purebred and they're desperate for money. Professional breeders will help you choose the right puppy and the dogs will be socialized with people. You will usually get a high-quality puppy and your money's worth.

Never buy from a pet store. You have been given some excellent information here.
bluebonn I have no idea where you get your info but Pedigree means one of two things - horrible dog food or the linnage history of a dog. Pedigree is NOT a registry. if it is not registered it is not likely to have a pedigree!
Of course they are pet quality - all but a very few are pet quality & the responsible, reputable breeders have them.
AKC is the registry that sets the breed standard however it is a registry & no guarantee of anything.
Puppy mills & BYB's also have tons of AKC dogs. Do your homework.

dogs from petstores are generally bred for money---are you familiar with the term "puppy mill"? well its a BAD place where they breed and breed and breed dogs with other dogs not caring if the dogs are too young or if they are interbreeding family members! The dogs are cramped into small places with unacceptable living conditions...most/all dogs from pet stores come from puppy mills...and puppy mill/pet store dogs tend to show MAJOR health problems later on in life such as kindey, liver, and heart failure...
I would suggest getting a pompom puppy from a breeder...breeders know what they are doing and can almost gaurentee the health of the dog
also, believe it or not but, buying from a breeder is also way cheaper than buying from a pet store: if you were to buy a dog from petland for example, it may cost you $600 to $900 for a mutt mix breed dog from a puppy mill that is of bad health; whereas if you were to go to a professional breeder you might pay $200 to $600 for a pure breed pompom puppy with papers and good health...its really worth the extra research to find a breeder in your area... and its usually not to hard to find a breeder if you check your yellow pages or ask your local vet
good luck!
you may also want to consider adoption...right now
http://www.petfinder.com has 833 Pomeranians up for adoption! check it out and rescue a pompom puppy in need! (I just looked at pet finder and typed in the breed and that's how I know that there are 833 pompoms on there-they range in age from just weaned puppies all the way to senior dogs --- some are mixes and some have papers...they are sure to have the right dog for you on petfinder, if you care to adopt-which I strongly urge to do then petfinder is the best place to look!)

Stay away from pet store puppies. They are usually sold to the store by a puppy mill. Don't support it. If you want a pomeranian, look at the pomeranian rescue pages. If you can't find a pom, get a mix. They are just a good as a purebred and are dying to find a home. Don't waste your money or time by supporting the puppy mills!

They don't have much as far as rules are concerned. Try to check local breeders. There are breeder web sites. This way, you can see the type of environment the puppies were raised, the parents, etc. This is the prefered menthod. Frequently, the puppies from a store come from puppy mills, and the temperment on the puppies have much to be desired.
