That is how much tread you have on the tires. The depth in the cracks.

The measurement indicates how much wear your tires have sustained from use. Typically new tires will have 11/32 of an inch of tread depth. As you continue to drive your vehicle the top number will get smaller as it wears. Usually when it gets down to 3/32 of an inch, most tire places will no longer even rotate your tires as they would not consider the tire to be safe to do so any more.

This is actually a good diagnostic tool for a technician. You can measure the tread in 3 different spots - inside, middle, outside and this will tell you if you are overinflating your tires, underinflating your tires, or even if you have a suspension problem.

Happy Motoring.

In most states your tires will not pass inspection if they are worn down to the wear bars inside the tread separations. That value is either 2 - 3 thirty seconds of an inch of tread depth. Pick up a tire tread depth gage at any auto parts store an measure them yourself from time to time. The guage is particularly helpful if you measure across the tire and keep an eye on wear all bars should be wearing evenly. That means your tire pressure is on the money. If the tire reads high in the center the tires are too soft. The opposite is true if the tire pressure is too hard.

They are measuring the tread you have left on your tires. 6/32 means you have 6/32 of an inch of tread left on your tires. A general rule is if you stick a penny in your tread head side down and you can see any of lincolns head you need new tires. Hope this helps.

When you toke your drivers test there should have been a question about tire tread. I'm not sure myself anymore, but the lowest a tire tread should be is 6\32. Take a penny and hold it in the tread with Lincolns head down in the tread. If you see all of his hair than you probably need new tires. If you still have it look up the info in the drivers license study book.
