How can it be considered rude for one to sit quietly and mind one's own business?
Now, if you insist on reading out loud, or asking strangers what the big words mean, that's another issue.

No not at all. I used to travel for work about 40 weeks a year. That is ALLOT of eating out alone. I would always bring a novel to read while I was eating. It is allot more comfortable then sitting alone and looking at everyone else!!!!!! There is absolutely nothing wrong with it!!

Not rude at all, I do it often when eating by myself. Try to make it a decent read though, news or fun stuff. Don't bring work reading unless you have to, it ruins the meal.

It certainly is not rude. The only reason reading while eating is rude is because you are showing the other people that your book is more interesting than they are. No one else at your table? No problem.
I have read the few times that I have eaten out alone.

I work in a public library. When I go to lunch (by myself), I take a book with me. I've read in McDonald's, Burger King, Wendy's and nicer restaurants.
Quite often, I have talked about the book with the wait staff and they come to the library to check out the book!
Read on!

Sure, why not? If you're not hurting anyone, feel free to do so. I do that all the time if I'm traveling on business and don't have a meal appointment lined up.

Yes, as long as you aren't taking longer than usual to eat.
I do it all the time, especially when I travel. I have timed myself, and I use about the same amount of time as I do eating with other people.

I would assume that is what most people do.
I wouldn't go to a fine dining restaurant and do that, but I wouldn't go to a fine dining restaurant to eat alone either. If you are just going to a cafe or something it's probably expected

Sorry to answer with a question, but why would it be rude to read in this situation?
