Be a mentor. Teach them organization skills, teach them about the value of a dollar, take them on adventure trips to work sites etc. Start small by doing a paper route. That worked for my hubby.

1. Lead by example.
2. Assign chores and teach them how to do them correctly and thoroughly.
3. Check their work; point out where they have gone wrong and get them to correct it so they know what and how it needs to be done.
4. Teach them to be honest in the little things - work ethic is something that develops over all aspects of a persons' life.
5. Teach them to do what is right even when no one is looking.
6. Don't always praise the good job at the time. Sometimes praise after the fact is just as affective "I forgot to mention it earlier, great job on ..... I did notice"
7. Teach them to see the task through to the end regardless.

Lead by example, teach them the value of money and coupons. teach them the difference between wants and needs, ie you don't need that abercrombie shirt, you want it. Have them do chores, let them babysit, don't spoil them money wise. Encourage them to get their first job at 16, or at least the summer after, and make them use their money for what htey want. Give them responsibility, even if its just taking care of the pet. And dont just fix their mistakes, make them learn the consequences of neglecting responsibility.
all of this will instill a good work ethic and help them when they are older and move out of the house for the first time.

Assign chores in the house, jobs, let them know that they have a responsibility to help the house keep running and that their part is important--that they are depended on, and be sure and compliment them when they do well, don't be harsh or negative, just offer positive reinforcement and constructive advice, and thank them for their good work. I think allowance ought to come just as a given, not dependent on their work in the house. As they get a little older maybe you could ask around your town to try and set them up with occasional (or maybe even regular) after school, or summer work. Make sure they are proud of working, that they understand its a very good thing to do ones part. Good luck!

I have had great success by having him earn money. He buys many of his recreational things. He mows the yard for money. If he says he does not want the money, I tell him he can do it for free. If wants a $350 Haro, I help him figure out how he can earn the money. He has had a savings account for a car since he was 8

Absolutely what Betsy said!!!
Also, make a game of cleaning up. Remember the "clean up song?" To the tune of "Shortenin' bread"
Everybody clean up
Clean up everybody
Everybody clean up
All this mess...
And repeat this over and over until all the mess is cleaned up. Eventually, it is a conditioned response. Works great in preschoolers!!!
