The Secret is based on complete nonsense. From a scientific perspective, the claims it makes are so mind-boggling in their stupidity that I could spend the better part of a day debunking them. Instead I have some quotes that sums things up pretty well:
Rhonda Byrne "took the well-worn ideas of some self-help gurus, customized them for the profoundly lazy, [and] gave them a veneer of mysticism..."
"The Secret is The Da Vinci Code meets Tony Robbins."
"The Secret is [a] creed so transparently ugly and stupid that it seems impossible that anyone could take it seriously."
"Touching on themes of greed and blaming-the-victim...[The Secret]..is a "moronic hymn to greed and selfishness" and that it "nastily suggests that victims of catastrophe are the authors of their misfortunes."
"The Secret is...pseudoscientific, psychospiritual babble."

My problem with it is this. In essence what The Secret gives you is the opportunity to make your own god – one made in your image; one who responds to your every want and desire, regardless of the effect on anyone around you; the opportunity to be god yourself. This is the very same offer the Serpent made to Eve in the Garden of Eden. The consequences of her acceptance should be sufficient warning to us all.
The alternative is to place your trust in the God who is revealed in the Bible. The God who is wise and good and who cannot be manipulated to fulfill selfish desires; the God who arranged the universe by His command. The God revealed in these verses:
For by Him [God] all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things have been created through Him and for Him. (Colossians 1:16)
Worthy are You, our Lord and our God, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and because of Your will they existed, and were created. (Revelation 4:11)
Oh, the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments and unfathomable His ways! For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who became His counselor? Or who has first given to Him that it might be paid back to Him again? For from Him and through Him and to Him are all things. To Him be the glory forever. Amen. (Romans 11:33-36)

Doesn't matter 'how it applies' - it doesn't work, period. It's just like praying. You want something to happen, you tend to act in a way that will make it happen, it happens, and you credit god, the universe, whatever. But god doesn't exist and the universe doesn't give a damn about you. If you want an education, get out there and get one. If you want to fall in love, get out there and meet people. Don't wait for something to do it for you. If that worked, no one would ever get up off the couch.

I think a lot of people misunderstood it, and those who discovered it or whatever, did a poor job at explaining it.
