He also said that unless you hate your family, you can't follow him. It gets tricky. Wanna borrow my decoder ring?

Are you sure he said "Take my yoke upon you"? I always thought it was He will take *our* yokes upon him, and give us rest from our burdens or something along those lines.
Anyway, the church is not Jesus. I think Jesus would be very angry with the church today. Follow Christ, not Christianity.

This: how come the churches burden us down with do's and don'ts
Is a great question! The fact is that were never intended to be blind followers of some pastor, but are to understand for ourselves.

The Catholic church tells me to come to Mass on one day a week and join in the celebration of the Eucharist, it tells me to use the sacrament of Confession, it also says that I must fast at certain times and give Alms to the poor, none of these have ever been a burden or a hardship, they are the sign of the faith of the Apostles and would I do any less than they?

Chuches are made up of people and we are far from being perfect. You're right, Christianity is not about do's and don'ts. It's about loving Christ and letting Christ love us - we will do what's right out of our love.
Did you know that a yoke was a device for two bulls to plow along side eachother with? Isn't it lovely that we're never alone.

What are the "churches" asking you to do? Jesus's burden being light is that when you give your cares to Him, He will comfort you and give you peace. Keep your focus on Him and your feet will not get caught.

Do's and Don'ts are just church dogma. You have free will...everything in your life is a choice, including whether or not to take that burden.

Its not "hard" to follow HIM, but, its what the Church puts on you, that makes it "hard" to folllow "them"!
Each one has thier pomp and pagents and ceremonies and all that, that the sagacies and pharasies were famous for.
JESUS warned about those who would go in satin robes, and vestments and sit at the head of the table and make long speaches, to beware of them, that all they think about is the "glory" for themselves, and not CHRIST.
So, focus on the main issue which is why JESUS died, was buried and resurected for your Sins! So that you may be washed in the blood of the lamb, and come to HIM spotless for those who believe that he did this for you! Then get baptised for rebirth.
I wish you well....

That is because Jesus and the Catholic church are two different entities altogether. The church needs your obedience and your support, Jesus simply wants to serve. Jesus allows the church because it does provide many people with something tangible, but that doesn't mean that he, ipso facto, gives it carte blanche. The higher the position, the greater the reckoning.

The dos and don'ts are the rules of religion---you can follow them good, but it doesn't always mean you are following Jesus.

Words are cheap. Just because someone says something does not make it so. Jesus teachings were designed to attract many followers.
