My son is exploring Satanism. I'd like to help him on his path to self-discovery and I'm wondering if you have any advice for me or him?

Please no Christian preaching as I'm pagan and I'm already too far gone to be saved. ;)

He's 17 and not doing it to be rebellious. On the other hand he asked if he was "allowed" to get a couple books and I went to Borders with him that night and picked up what he wanted. I actually find them fascinating. To be rebellious, he'd be doing it to get a rise out of me and he knows me well enough to know that religion is a personal choice and not something I'm going to argue with him about.

The book he's reading now is "The Church of Satan". We've been reading it together.

Sorry... "The Satanic Bible"... we've been on the "Church of Satan" website.

YAY PAGAN!

Ahem. Well, you can always offer him books. If he's getting into Le Vay (I always switch the a and e for that) Satanism, then buy him a book or two on it.

Be willing to participate in things with him, and listen to what he finds exciting, and even see if you can find something you believe is exciting in Satanism.

I'm sure you'll be able to, you seem like a good Mom!

LaVey Satanism or other Satanism?

I suggest you attend some meetings with him and perhaps host some Satanists at dinner or something.

[Ok, LaVeyan - I understand that they are all about exploring/embracing your true self (starting with the "bad" side), so perhaps you two can discuss some pertinent world issues and how you feel about them, how they affect you, what emotions you connect to them - especially how you personally react to them (honestly) and how that's okay. That's only a rough outsider's view of the group, though. Enjoy!]

Well, I'm no Satanist, but I've always found the source cited below to be an excellent resource to learn about religions. And they always point to additional material to read. There's lots of good information about Satanism there, I've read some of it.

Hope that helps!

Edit:
PS...wish my parents had been half as interested as you are. Dad is still mad at me for not being Christian. Mom didn't care, but she wasn't interested, either.

I am not Satanist, but the best advice I can give (as I wish my parents would have done this when i started researching other religions outside of christianity) is read up on it. Explore with him. Make it a learning experience for both of you. Show him in action that you support any path he finds to be true for himself. I don't know where to begin this journey beyond saying google it or something like that, like I said, I'm not a Satanist. But I'm sure there's a wealth of information just waiting to be learned. Above all, make sure your son knows you support his decision. That will make all the difference in the world to him later in life.

Find out for yourself. Read The Satanic Bible and you will understand what it's all about. It's not a very long book.

I'm not really sure what advice I can give you. You sound like you're doing a wonderful job!
You can email me if you have more specific questions.

And please ignore the "you're making a mistake" people.
I wish my mom was as understanding as you when I started my path. Though once I got her to understand that it's definitely not about hurting people or sacrificing babies and all that other Hollywood nonsense, she accepted it and even agreed with much of what Anton LaVey thought.

17 is old enough to start making serious, thought-out decisions. You seem to be doing well with the books and open mind. I would say, just keep it up!

Indeed, it is hot enough today without all this hot air from the holy rollers blowing around.....

It is commendable that you are allowing your son to make his own decisions. I would simply encourage him to do lots of research and trust his instincts. Every Satanist I've ever met has been a splendid individual. My only point of contention is that I personally found their philosophy to be too self-centered for me. Otherwise, I have lots of respect for them.

Is he exploring theistic or non-theistic Satanism?
There are several good websites and books available.

Sounds like your son has recently entered his rebellious teen years. Kinda normal- I'd ignore it.
