Italy has a lot of different aspects and people... I think it is not possible to describe properly a "national identity" for italian people: Northern Italians are much different, in way of thinking and life stile, from Southern Italians; but also Eastern Coast italians are different from Western Coast Italians and Mountaign Italians... eh eh eh!

Here are JUST FIVE examples of italian people in several Regions (in order from North to South) VERY DIFFERENT one from each other. These are MY OPINIONS:

LOMBARDIA (Northern Italy) = The main city here is Milano, the capital of Italian economy and fashion. Very active people, the average level of instruction is high; they like to live in a hurry and never lose time. They look for money and success. Lombardia has a lot of industries and very strong economy. Perhaps is the italian Region more similar to USA "way of thinking". For tourism, you will enjoy Lakes and a lot of museums. In Lombardia, the girls are "hunting" boys probably more than boys hunt girls... these girls are very keen and like to do career in life, ride motorcicles or do several sports, or study a lot. Their boyfriends have nearly to cook food and clean house for the girlfriends :)

MARCHE (Center Eastern Italy) = The main city here is Ancona, in the Conero Coast, good place for quiet tourism. Marche are ofthen nicknamed "the small Italy" since you can find nearly all there: sea, mountaigns, lakes, archeology, historical sites, etc.
The "Marchigiani" are very quiet people. They simply work hard and live for their families: local girls do not like to leave Marche. In the past, Marchigiani were usually choosen to be Tax Collectors (by the Roman Empire earlier, by the Pope later until late 1800), being a race of italian people widely known for being Lawful, quiet, difficult to corrupt, loyal to State/Leader. Still now, Marche is the italian Region with the lowest level of criminality.

TOSCANA (Center Western Italy) = The main city in this Region is Florence. Another fascinating city is Siena, but also obviously Pisa. These are very famous cityes.
The "Toscani" are very nice, humorous people, always like to joke with words, like to eat a lot of good roast meat and drink good red wine. Most of them like total freedom, hate any laws, work just to live and always long for Week-ends and Holidays. You may find a lot of artists among "Toscani" and also a lot of strange persons. The local girls, obviously, like only nice and humorous boys; the are very sociable girls, and they will not say "no" to you to an invite in some entertainig place.

CAMPANIA (Southern Italy) = The main city here is Napoli. A lot of places to see, very interesting for tourism and Napoli is a very fascinating city.
The "Napoletani" are somewhat particular people: the most humorous and sociable type of italians you can meet... but also shrewd and cunning. There are a lot of problems with criminality; in some city quarters the local people is really prone to steal or swindle and cheat... not very honest nor reliable people, indeed! Generally, the local "good" girls like to marry good boys, even stranger, and flee away from Napoli, looking for more quiet conditions of life in Northern Italy... or elsewere. Napoli is a interesting city just for touring... but it's impossible to live in it, if you come from other places. You must be born in Napoli to live in Napoli.

SICILIA (Very Southern Italy) = The main city here is Palermo. Other interesting cities are Messina, Catania, Siracusa, Agrigento. Well... this isle has a lot of problems, you know. The first problem is Mafia, but there is also a lot of street criminality. During Summer, you may experience some water shortages due to poor quality acqueduct.
The "Siciliani" are generally "good heart" people, but with little money and poor work... and many of them cannot cut their affairs or relationships with Mafia, and this affects social relations too. A "Siciliano" does everything he can do for his best friends and his family. The girls are "hot" and very jealous of their boyfriends.

I was raised in Billings, Montana. I have traveled the world. From the first time I landed in Italy, I felt as if I was "home". Sounds a little strange for an Irish guy from Montana, but this is the only way I can describe it. AWESOME!!! I've been back 18 times. I work for the sole purpose of saving money to travel to Italy. Love it.

I think the only way to really get a feel for a foreign country is to live there for at least 6 months. I lived in Italy for 3 years and it was wonderful.

It's the country where I was born, the country where I'd like to die but not necessarily the place I want to live.
