The last place to put your glasses is on a bed, chair, or anywhere you may sit on them (toilet seat - OUT). Place them on a counter where you do not have to bend down to find them, somewhere close to eye level. Always use the same spot every time you put them down, so it will become a habit, and you will know where you put them. If you are out and about, carry a case that attaches to your belt buckle, so you can always have your glasses with you. I DO NOT suggest using the eyeglass neck cords. If you start to use this, it may cause your glasses to be caught on things, lenses scratched more than usual, and the temples (arms) broken more often than they should. Only use the neck cord if you will be taking your glasses off, and putting them back on often throughout the day (like people with reading only glasses at the office).
The most important thing to have is a spare pair of glasses. If you cannot find your main pair, you will always have the spare pair readily available, and you will not end up late to work, at least not because you could not find your glasses :)

You probably got a case with the glasses when you bought them. As long as this case has some "backbone" (it doesn't have to be a completely hard case, but it should not just be a little bag), it will protect your glasses. If you always store this in the same place (say, a drawer), you will not lose it.

Stand-up cases are tempting, but you have to be careful sometimes that they have a soft lining, so as not to scratch the lenses.

If you really don't want to store them in a case, just always put them in the same safe place, like on your nightstand, desk, or on top of the dresser.

When you take them off put them in a place that's in plain sight, somewhere that isn't under a magazine or behind the lamp.

Put the lid down on the toilet, place your towl on it and the glasses on top, when you get out of the shower put your glasses on and dry off.

If not a matter of where you put them but getting in the habit of always putting them in the same safe place. My driving glasses live in their case in the glove compartment. One pair of reading glasses stays on my desk at work. Another pair in on the table next ot my chair in the living room.

get an eyeglass chain and wear them around your neck so you never lose them that way. At night try placing them on the nightstand next to your bed. It's not good for your glasses but when I go to bed I place them under my pillow.

Put a stand up case on your dresser and put them there every time you take them off. You will need to train yourself to do this but you will never lose them again.

Hook them on the neck of your shirt (assuming it's not a turtle neck :) ).
Get one of those stand-up glasses cases that you can just set on a table, and put them in that. Or instead of buying a case you can just put a glass on the table and use that as a dropping place for them, that way they won't get stuff set on top them.

Get a bright colored case, and put them in your case and leave it somewear in sight. If they are in case and they get knocked off the counter or table they will still be safe and the bright color will be easy to see even without the glasses.

In the shower put them on the bathroom counter close to your toothbrush.
