I was shopping with my two kids and when I got out to the car to unload the kids/groceries my cart kept trying to roll away. Why don't "they" have brakes on shopping carts... I thought that would be an easy enough invention, like a brake on a children's stroller or wheel chair....nothing fancy just to keep the cart from rolling away!!!

The grocery store nearby has the shopping carts with brakes already - but quite heavy. So I would guess someone currently holds this patent. However, patent is also issued to the "improvement" on current product. You definitely should look into it.
If you can figure out a way to make it weigh less (think about mom pushing a full cart of grocery plus kids...), not only you can become a millionaire but I will thank you for that.

I have seen shopping carts with brakes. It was a foot brake that was applied to put pressure against the wheel. That was at least 10 years ago. I suspect the cost has prevented this from becoming widely used equipment though.

I'm sure it's been thought off but it will add unwanted expense to an already expensive item that really provides no tangible return on investment plus it would add to the maintenance costs of shopping carts.

It's a good idea but it'll be a very hard sell.

For good measure you might want to add turn signals too, or side view mirrors at least.
