That IS the difference. Baptists are not Pentecostal. The gifts of the Holy Spirit were imparted on the day of Pentecost. Those gifts include prayer in other tongues. The Baptists believe that those gifts have passed away and do not use them. That does not mean they are not Christians.
Pentecostal can be an adjective as well as the name of a denomination. For example, I worship in the Assemblies of God church [denomination]. We are Pentecostal [adjective], meaning we practice the gifts of the Holy Spirit.

I am a Baptist and I do speak in tongues as do many of my fellow worshippers. It is scriptural and is a gift of the Holy Spirit. Pentecostals put their main focus on the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and the speaking in tongues. Baptists generally believe that tongues should not be spoken unless there is an interpreter present and even then, only one or two at a time. Baptist worship can be very joyful but Pentecostals can be very exhuberant and sometimes portray a picture of 'froth and bubble' but no serious teaching.

What is the difference between Christian, Baptist and Pentecostal religion?
Christianity is one of the world's primary religions. Others would include Buddhism, Hinduism, Judaism and Islam. Within the Christian tradition, there are hundreds of different traditions, some large like Roman Catholic, Greek Orthodox, Anglican and Lutheran, and some relatively small, as well as several movements that aren't denominations, but rather approaches to Christian faith. Two of those movements are the Baptist and Pentecostal traditions.
The Baptist tradition encompasses several groups. The largest is the Southern Baptist Convention. These Baptist traditions grew out of the Protestant Reformation in Europe, but have flourished especially in the United States. They don't practice infant baptism, but encourage baptism after the age of 12 or so. Each congregation has certain autonomy. They have a strong commitment to missionary work.
The Pentecostal tradition covers a lot of ground, but is marked mainly by belief in spiritual gifts like speaking in tongues and prophecy. Pentecostal worship tends to be exuberant.
To add to the confusion, there are some Protestant denominations that use the word “Christian” in their congregations' names. One is the Disciples of Christ. Thus, at one street corner in Indianapolis, you will find a Roman Catholic church, a Presbyterian church, and a “Christian” church (Disciples of Christ). All fall within the Christian religion.

The biggest difference is the gifts of the spirit, also freedom of worship. (IE.. raising hands standing, saying amen / praise the Lord..etc.) my husband was raised in a baptist church, fell away and now we are pentecostal. Speaking in tongues is a gift, not a requirement for Heaven.
David was the first "pentecostal" before it was "pentecostal".He knew how to worship! he danced and sang, I'm sure if the gift of tongues would have been available to him he would have gotten it.
No one can take your salvation but you can give it up.
Even Satan believes in Jesus, Can't go to heaven and live like hell. We are set free form sin, not free to commit sin.
I also know, not all baptists are the same hypocrites they get blamed to be, just as all Pentecostals are not gibbering idiots that roll on the floor.

I dont put down anyone religions or belief. There is not alot of difference between these two. However a baptist (depending on which one) doesnt practice the speaking of tongues or the rolling down the isels. The Pentecostal are more open and lively in their services.

Pentecostals believe the part in the Bible where it says "lest you are born again of the water and of the spirit you cannot enter into the kingdom of God". and when the recieved the Holy spirit they spoke with other tongues. the part where it says that we are supposed to live a holy, modest, separated life. women aren't to wear clothes that pertain to a man. that a woman's hair is given to her for her glory that if you trim it you might as well shave it all off. that the body is the temple of God and that you shouldn't do things that harm it including smoking, drugs, etc. we see that they only ever were baptised in Jesus' name and that the bible says that God robed himself in flesh and came and dwelt among us. (God, Jesus, and the Holyghost are one in the same). we see that no where in the bible does it say to accept the Lord as your personal savior ignore everything else in the bible and you will be saved forever no matter how you live afterwards. pentecostals get just as excited about Jesus as other people can get at a ball game or a concert. (and we are the "crazy" ones??)

John was the baptist. Pentecost is 50 days after the ascention. Then there is trumpets, tabernacles, and ingathering. I hope your not talking about religion. If so good luck getting out of the dogma quagmire, hair splitting waste of time.

Let me say it this way-Pentecostals are almost exactly like Baptist except that most Pentecostals :
1 believe in tongues
2 can lose your salvation
3 God can change
4 you must speak in tongues to be saved
5 you don't need to go to school-depend on the Holy Ghost
6 Women must not were jewelry, make-up, or have their hair fixed
7 but the men can

I am Baptist and the only difference that I see is that Pentecostal belive that you must speak in tougue to be saved, Baptist believe that speaking in tougue is a gift from God, and that not everyone has that gift but other gifts. You do not have to speak in tougue to be saved. Please tell me where Jesus ever spoke in tougue.
