Relax - my son was about 5 minutes away from starting kindergarten before he stopped screaming at the potty training idea. I drove myself nuts and him as well and it was all fine once he figured out that no one else at school was going to be wearing diapers or training pants. Let him lead for while - I know it's frustrating, but this isn't working either, is it?

Potty training is a big thing for little boys. You have to set aside 1 full day which you will devote totally to his training. We got my 3 year old (two at the time) to go in the potty immediately. The only problem was he did not like the feeling poopy gave him so he took about 6 - 8 months to adjust. He went from one day pooping on his bedroom floor and kicking it under his bed, to going in the potty the very next day. Quite literally!! Do not give up hope because when you least expect it the light bulb will go on above his head and he will do it on his own. The biggest thing is you have to make a HUGE deal out of it when he makes it to the potty!!! Do that at least for a week as he needs that attention. After the week passes, if he does go in his pants he most likely will not like the way it feels and if you say "Its ok we all have mistakes I know you can go in the potty" He will realize two things: It's not that big of a deal, I like when my pants are dry. and ITS NOT THAT BIG OF A DEAL. Good luck!!!!

Whatever you do, do not let him know that you have an issue with this or he will resist because only he is in control. If you have gotten yourself into a power struggle over this, let it go for awhile.

Go to the store and have him pick out some “Big Boy” underwear. I suggest you put him into clothing that he can get on and off without your help. Let him practice putting his clothes on and taking them off until he can do so successfully before you train him. Let him use the adult toilet. If he cannot get up on it without help get him a step stool. This one is great! http://thepottystool.com/ If you have a particular bathroom that he is afraid of, change it up on him and let him use another bathroom in your home if you have one. Count out the remainder of his diapers with him and tell him “10 more diapers left. When these run out you get to use the toilet.” Saying “you get to” rather than “you have to” puts the power into his hands. When you feel it is about time that he needs to go or if you see him doing the “potty dance,” say to him “Guess what? It’s potty time!” or you can simply say “It seems like you need to use the bathroom.” Give it no more attention than that. If he is successful, do not bribe him with treats, stickers, or candy. Some children do take an interest in toilet training if there is a big reward such as a new bike or starting a new school. You may see if something like this will motivate him. Instead of using small rewards praise him by saying things like “You went to the bathroom without help! You must be so proud of yourself!” If he has an accident, hold him responsible for as much as the cleanup at possible. I know it is hard to take a step back but if you give the power to him and he takes care of soiled clothing it won’t take long for him to see that it is much easier to use the bathroom.

Be patient and good luck to you!

First, does he NEED to be potty trained for preschool or something? If he does NOT need to be trained, then stop trying. You will make him HATE the toilet!! My son was 4 years and 3 months when he finally decided he wanted to wear big boy underwear. Every child is different. And you can't make some one use the toilet if they don't want to. I dont think that trying to make him potty train will bring the best of results either. He could pee in his pants when he is mad at you, or just refuse to make poops like some kids do. Good Luck.

I agree with what LA says. My daughter is the same age and she too has screemed when I try to put her on the potty or even try to put her cute big girl undies on. She has peed on the potty one time but still shows no interest since. I am not going to worry anymore as I know she will let me know when she is ready, just like your son will do the same. Good Luck

pick on thing and be consistent with it. what works best is big kid undies. put him in big kid undies as soon as he wakes up. go straight to the potty and put on the undies. then once an hour every hour take the child potty. it my experience with talking to other parents the biggest mistake is thinking the child will go on their own or will tell you they have to go. no they wont we as parents i have a four year old and this is what worked for him have to take them once an hour. my son goes on his own and tells us when he has to go now but a year ago he didnt understand that he had to
