My cat was vomiting and he was listless so I took him to the vet. She found a piece of dental floss wrapped around his tongue and it was going down into his stomach! He had surgery today and should be fine. Has anyone else had this happen?

I blame the dental floss on my husband because he can't get it in the trash!

It hasn't happened to my pets but I've heard to keep dental floss away from cats and dogs for this reason, so it must have happened before.

I have not had this happen personally, but I have caught my cat trying to eat dental floss before. I have kids that don't always care if they hit the garbage can or not and it seems that they are always leaving dental floss around. I have heard stories of floss, string or plastic collecting in a cat's stomach and causing a blockage, so I am extremely careful and try to make sure there isn't anything like that lying around. A few more things you should be wary of are Christmas tree tinsel, Easter grass and fishing line. I'm glad your kitty is ok!

Ah yes... lol...

Long time ago, she fished the floss out of the can...

Hubby noticed cat running around, something dragging behind her...

Got a closer look... had long piece of dental floss dangling from butt, at other end was small turd stuck to floss, "following" the cat everywhere...

Lucky for us (and mostly for the cat), nothing more dramatic to this story than a good laugh.

cats love to pick up any type of string or objects laying of the floor. since they have that sandpaper toungue most soft objects get stuck and the cat will try to move his toungue to get it off only to have it move further toward his throat.

so in reality the cat will actually end up swallowing what he is trying to get out of his mouth.

I have caught my cats with thread, tinsle, string, hair and many other items that I have had to pull out of his throat before he swallowed the entire thing.

The items I have not been able to catch usually come out the other end a few days later. I cannot use tinsel (I love) on my xmas tree cause my calio loves to play with it. I found this out by finding a few balled up pieces of tinsel in her stool.

Most times these things will pass but some can get caught and wrap around their intestines and other organs of the body causing great pain and distress if not death.

buy the floss that is attached to those plastic pics and toss the string floss until he learns how to actually find the can.

HAHAHAHA!!!! That's a GOOD one Platy! Let's just say my Bengal cat pounces on ANYTHING that moves! Especially if it's under the covers! LOL! The weird thing is that I have to run him out of the room if my husband and I want to um, "you know", otherwise he tends to watch like he's taking notes! He's extremely intelligent and I'm sure that he really IS taking notes. But really, you gotta wonder where some of the strange sounds that the parrot makes comes from....

You're lucky! If it had gotten into her intestines, it could have done a world of damage (also elastic from socks, so watch out for fraying socks). The string can cut into the intestines, causing bleeding, obstructing instestines, or stomach bile to enter the body --- fatal.

I have a pug that eats everything, and I've heard a few pug horror stories about intestinal distress from eating stringy objects. I have to watch him like a hawk in the house.
Hopefully, your cat isn't as adventurous and won't ingest random items like my pug tries!
I've caught him swallowing yarn and had to slowly work it out of his throat, he was hacking on it. It hadn't gone in too far and I didn't pull hard, but I managed to get about 6 inches out and he was immediately fine.

Hope your kitty recovers quickly!

When I got my first cat, I put a pretty diamond studded collar on her. I noticed one day that she was sort of spazzing out. She had started chewing on the end of the collar(trying to get it off I suppose) and the thread had unraveled and she had swallowed it partially. I had to pull it out, it was pretty disgusting. So needless to say, my cats don't wear collars(they're indoor only cats)

train your husband to aim the floss in the trash can and make sure that he learns not to miss in future. easier to train husband than the cat not to touch it. i have heard about it but it hasn't happened to me but one of my cats tries to eat my cross stitch cotton.

Maybe you should buy the cat a Water-Pic so it not need to floss? :-p
But, no, I never seen or had it happen. It is good to know these things so we can all be more careful for our pets. Thanks for sharing.

I've heard of it, but never had it happen. The same thing can happen with christmas tree tinsel. Scary -- hope your baby will be just fine soon :)
