Nor did he need to believe in Jesus to get into heaven.

Just like those billions of people who lived for 3,000-4,000 years before Jesus.

And the billions after him........ who follow a covenant not made by Paul.

GEN017:009-10 -- And God said unto Abraham, Thou shalt keep my covenant therefore, thou, and thy seed after thee in their generations. This is my Covenant, which ye shall keep, between me and you and thy seed after thee; Every male child among you shall be circumcised.

GAL005:002 --Behold, I Paul say unto you , that if ye be circumcised, Christ shall profit you nothing.

John 8:56-58
56: Your father Abraham rejoiced to see my day: and he saw it, and was glad.
57: Then said the Jews unto him, Thou art not yet fifty years old, and hast thou seen Abraham?
58: Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Before Abraham was, I am.

Abraham did believe in Jesus.....

Somewhere in Jesus teaching He says that Abraham saw Jesus day and rejoiced (unless I am confusing him with Moses; but Moses is also linked in with the old Jewish covenant anyway). So I think there are probably revelations Abraham had that aren't recorded, about God's Messiah.

For instance the three angels who Abraham meets before Sodom and Gomorrah get destroyed, become two angels as they go down to the Salt Sea basin. It would be appear that the third angel is actually God as an "angel of the Lord". Some have suggested such encounters were actually encounters with the Christ. A lot more must have been discussed than exists in the account.

The point Paul is making is that salvation through works never worked. Abraham was really rewarded for faith. The historical and prophetical writings show failure again and again. Human history shows the same thing. Look at Isaiah 59, its the prophet saying the Jewish people have failed to do as they were bidden.
Hence the Galatians are told not to go through the Old Covenant, but through the New Covenant, to access God. To try to get right with God through the Old Covenant after having trusted in the Saviour for forgiveness and right standing with God is despising Jesus's sacrifice - He would not have offered Himself for us unless there was no other way.
Galatians 2:21 "I do not set aside the grace of God [Christ's sacrifice], for if righteousness could be gained through the Law, Christ died for nothing. [He came and died as the old Covenant was a temporary measure until the Messiah provided a full salvation]"

Oh really?!!! Us Christians aren't any better then any one else, just in the KNOW! Who the REAL Messiah truely is!!! Then who do you say this person of Melchizedek is, that father Abraham actually paid a tithe to? Genesis And who was it that came to Abram when in the desert, and told him that he and his wife Sara were to have a son?!!! For no man can behold the FACE of God and live, and yet the Jews believe that this was God that appeared unto Abram both times!!! Is that not true?!!!
Jesus said to His followers, especially Phillip who had ask Him,"Do you not know me, and I have been with you all this time? And before Abraham was, . . I am! Jesus stood before Father Abraham, and was in existence before the world was created!!!

I already answered the first part of this question.

However, today the only valid covenant with God is the covenant of Christ.
