MSG (Mono-Sodium Glumate), high fructose corn syrup and other processed ingredients are found in fast-foods (not just Chinese food) and also foods in the grocery store. You should stay away from these, because they help slow down American metabolisms. You should shop in the organic/natural foods section of the grocery store or go to Whole Foods/Farmers Market....
Make sure you drink plenty of water....The amount of ounces you should be drinking is: divide your weight by 2 and that's the amount in ounces you should be drinking...The 8 glasses a day doesn't account for everyone!!
Also, as far as exercise...You don't have to kill yourself with starting off with the high speed" fitness....start off small and work your way up!!
Also, green fruits and veggies are good at burning fat....i.e. green tea is a great detox drink!!
Hope this helps!

Well when I have tried to diet I read that you need to cut out the caffeine that it actually will slow it down. And I read to drink hot water during the day intsead of cold.
One of the best exercise to increase metabolism and speed up weight loss is to walk at a continuous fast pace for 20 to 40 minutes a day, 5 days per week. Any exercise that will get your heart rate to 60 - 70% max rate (fast enough to talk while exercising but not sing) and last a minimum of 20 minutes is considered aerobic and is great for increasing the metabolism.

I have heard that if you eat regularly, and consume the proper foods, it helps speed up your metabolism. A friend of mind has been losing weight and she eats 5 times a day. SHe has a good breakfast, a snack before lunch, like yogurt or a banana, eats lunch -- snack time again - she will eat the new Ritz crackers/chips that just came out, and she abides by the daily intake suggestion... then a nice dinner. Her meat portions have been cut in half (no more than 5 oz. of beef) and has replaceds all the sodas and lemonades with water. She hasn't been doing it but for a couple of months and she is looking great.
Keep in mind, too that different diets work for different people. Atkins worked very well for my sister, but the diet bombed on my father! Your physician might be able to steer you in the right direction to see what best fits you!

Well, certain foods don't actually "speed" it up. It's the combination of quality foods, exercise and a lot of water. Most people underestimate the wonders that water actually does for the human body. Since you know your body needs water anyway, and you know you have to drink it, you should love it. In order for your metabolism to perform at its optimal level, regardless of your diet and exercise, you have to have enough water in your body. (I'm not saying this is your problem, but it can't hurt and it is often the missing link in peoples fitness program.) Good Luck.

You must,
1. Not starve yourself, take what you normally eat during the day, divide it by 6 smaller meals and eat them at regular intervals.
2. Exercise more than 30 minutes.
3. Work large muscle groups at the same time (walking, bicycling, cross country skiing, swimming, step aerobics give your arms and legs a good workout).
4.Vary Your Workout -
Your body becomes efficient at doing the same exercise day after day, and you burn fewer calories. Try alternating gym workouts with outside activities or change your routine every six weeks. You'll burn more energy--and you won't get as bored.
5.Eat a Good Breakfast
People who skip breakfast burn 5 percent fewer calories than those who eat a healthy morning meal-
6.Avoid Alcohol and Smoking
Both inhibit the burning of abdominal fat. That's why drinkers and smokers tend to be bigger around the waist than abstainers.
7.Resist PMS Cravings...and cravings in general
The evidence is that women's bodies burn more calories between ovulation and menstruation. That's why sugary snacks look so good during this period. Don't starve yourself, but if you can resist the cravings for high-energy foods, your body will burn fat stores for energy.
8.Eat Less Fat
Your body is very efficient at turning the fat you eat into body fat. It takes a lot more energy to turn carbohydrates into fat. That's why cutting back to less than 30 percent of your calories from fat can help you reduce your body fat more than just cutting total calories.

You have many great replies, my recommendation is a tat bit different.
Lipo 6 These speed up your metabolism but beware you can only take them two months at a time AND you absolutely must exercise when taking them.
They are great in helping you burn fat (if that is what you want aside from speeding up your metabolism).
If you decide to give them a try, do not and I repeat do not take the last 2 pills after Noon or you won't sleep.

All exercise will speed your metabolism. It simply has to or you'd fall down in a useless heap on the ground, unable to move.
If your metabolism is particularly slow, examine your lifestyle to see where you can inject more activity that requires energy expendature.
The more walking and standing you do, the better. Heck you can even watch TV standing, it beats watching it sitting in terms of energy your body consumes.
Just find excuses to do things other than sitting, and you'll end up burning more energy.
