17 is still a child, you should report it to the police. Good luck, i'm sorry to hear about this. I have 2 small children and i cant imagine not knowing where they were. You are in my thoughts, take care.

How long has the kid been missing? Did he or she leave on bad terms or just leave with a friend or girlfriend/boyfriend?

I'd say call the police after 24 hours and file a missing persons report. Contact his or her friends and say that you just want him or her to check in by phone.

Most importantly, don't have a nervous breakdown. Take care of yourself. Cook some good food and try to be relaxed. Kids run away all the time. I went missing for three days when I was 17, with a girl I liked. I knew if I called home my parents would tell me to come home immediately. The vast majority of these cases turn out okay within a week or so.
If your son or daughter calls, tell them to keep the line of communication open and feel free to call if he or she runs into a problem.

Just wait a day. She'll probably run out of money and come home. I ran away when I was 17, and calling the police doesn't really help out. The person has to be missing for at least 48 hours for the police to even try to look for her. Just calm down, and you'll see that she'll be back. She probably just wanted to scare you, and to know taht people care for her.

Not allot you can do other than report him/her missing. Most states 17yr olds are free to move out. Police do not actively look for a young adult this age, it's pointless to try to force someone home to only have them leave again especially since they are aging out of the system. I say wait until he/she decides to contact you, there are millions of runaways in the US and states can barley keep up with young ones much less one that is a young adult basically and about to turn 18 anyway. I would also file as a missing person you'd get more cooperation than trying the runaway approach. Sometimes you have no choice but to let them go,

You should report him as a runnaway ASAP and have the most current picture of him and all of his friends phone numbers and addresses when the police come out to do the report. Also call Missing and Exploited Children. They will get all of his information and post signs where ever they think they need to post them.I really dont have the time to look through Missing and Exploited Childrens site to get the phone number for you but I will put their link on here for you.Call police now. They can put a warrant out for his arrest and bring him home if he is caught and call Missing and Exploited Children after you talk with the police.Good luck.

Wait 24 hours just in case.

Afterwards, You should file a missing persons report with the police.

Call your local TV news station, they have news tip hotlines for stories, and ask if you can have a minute or two long blurb show up on the evening news with a picture of your child and some details to the situation.

Design a flier with a picture, vital statistics, and contact information as well as a $50-250 reward sum for information that leads to finding her again. Hang fliers in places your child goes to often, like the local mall, the bulletin board outside a local grocery store, and in and around friend's neighborhoods.

Search for a diary s/he might have been keeping, look online to see if there are any clues on his/her MySpace/LiveJournal/other online diary. Ask his/her friends for web addresses for any websites your child might have been keeping for clues.

Call his/her friend's PARENTS to make sure they keep a close eye on their children to see if they meet with/aide your runaway.

Did he/she come back yet?
You should talk to your child about the reason she ran away. You may think that she is wrong for what she did but you were her age once too. What made you mad about your parents?
You can always come up with a solution for a problem.

First, call the police and report your child missing. The sooner you do this, the greater the chance of finding your son or daughter quickly, unharmed. Be prepared to give the police a list of friends and "hangout places" he or she might be, and also some recent pictures.

why, I am not sure what you can do about it
but as I understand it you teh only way to get help from the police is to say the he/she is missing
if you say run away in certain state they will tell you that at 17 he ahs teh right to leave without your permission
Goodluck & I will be saying a prayer for his/her safety
