Why is it that everybody passes up the first slice of bread and not just throw it away.
In my house there will be two heels of bread at the bottom of the bag.
I will eat it if no other has touched it while reaching for the slice behind it.
I've noticed this at family picnics, parties at work and at friends homes.
I imagine theres alot of germs on that one slice of bread that nobody wants but will take the slice leaning against it. yuck!

I use the heels of bread to make bread crumbs... I have a freezer bag in the freezer w/ all the "cast-off's". So, when I get a new loaf I take out the ends and freeze them when I need breadcrumbs I toast and grind them up in my mini food processor.... No germs...no waste !!!

I have never thought about that....but that is kind of gross. We feed the heels to our dogs, or I will take them to the park to feed the fish.
