I have other tattoos that still look very good after 8 years, but there is so much more detail in a portrait. Will it eventually fade or run and not look like the person in 10-20 years?

Ok, RUN was robably the wrong way to put it, but I've seen people in their 50's or 60's with old-looking tattoos that appear to have blurred, not just faded. It looks like a blotch of ink and the details are gone. Is that just a bad tattoo job or part of the aging of a tattoo?

I have a portrait tattoo and looked into this prior to getting it. My tattoo is small...only 3.5x3" - my artist is known around the world for portraits and he said that it will be ok...make sure to take care of it. The lines will soften a bit but the lines in a portrait tattoo are VERY fine lines...they're not like the outlines in most tattoos. My artist assured me that my tattoo will not eventually become a blob. The pic of my tattoo is on my avatar.

Portrait Tattoos Gone Wrong

Run?? it can't run...it's a tattoo....it's permanent....it might fade, some tattoos fade, just depends on how well you take care of it in the healing process...if you pick the scabs off the ink will come with. And the only reason it won't look like the person in 10 or 20 years is because the person you got the portrait of will be older and look diferent. or if you put it on a place where your skin is going to sag or get bigger and stretch.

Alot of what you see is the result of not having properly cared for the tattoo. Also from a technical standpoint, fine line work will blur over time. Tattoo artists working today take that into account and I think alot of their work is going to stand the test.

it all really depends on how well you'll be taking care of your tattoo and your body. that and how talented your artist is in the first place. you may need to get a touchup every few years but if you live a healthy lifestyle and STAY OUT OF THE SUN your tattoo should age fine. but if you treat your body like a junk yard then your tattoos will look like they belong in one.
