They do that to a large % of people who sign up.
How many people who read this were given the field of operation they were promised during the recruitment phase??
I bet not too many people.
They wait til you get to MEPS the morning you are to leave, then tell you they cannot put you in that field. So then people scramble and take just about anything so they don't have to go through all the stress of getting ready for bootcamp again.
I liked a lot of things about the Marines, but man can the military be shady at times.

Recruiters are trained to tell the recruit anything and everything. They are there to put a warm body in place no matter what. There is no guarantee that you will be stuck with that MOS but after school (which you might actually like) you can apply for another school. They might require you to work in the MOS for a while but if it is not a critical MOS you can change it.

First, in the future do not let anyone rush you when it comes to making decisions on your life. Second, can you change.......yes and no, yes in the fact that you have to get a DEP discharge and then re-enlist into another job. No in the fact that you can just change it or change after basic etc. If I were you I would go have a heart to heart with my recruiter and tell him that you want to change. If he tries to talk you out of it tell him you won't ship unless you get to change your job. If he/she won't help go and talk to the station commander.

If you've signed the contract then prett much no.. but you can just tell the recruiter you're not going unless they're willing to change.. not a lot they can do to you until you've actually joined. Hmm Concrete and Asphalt Equipment Operator? Cripes that does suck ***.

can it be done? yes. is it easy to do.. NO.
first, you have to qualify for another position. then, there has to be a slot for you in the training pipeline.
you can only be in DEP for a total of twelve months, and if you so not ship before that time is up, you willbe dropped and will have a much harder time gettingback in.
so, which do you want more: to be in the Army, or to have a different job?
and once you ship, you must be in the MOS for 2 years before you can reclassify.

I'm pretty sure there are ways of your changing your MOS. I definitely don't think it's an overnight thing though and you may have to deal with being a 21 Victor for a while. Talk to you chain of command....Voice your concerns. That's what they are there for! Thank you for serving our country.

if you already signed all your papers you will have to reenlist to reclass. or if you fail or get in trouble in ait the army will change it to the needs of the army. but if this happens you will lose any bonus, guarenteed duty station, and college money (with the exception of the MGIB). if didnt sign the papers lucky you. tell your recruiter what you want and if he/she doesnt deliver tell them to get bent (make sure you have the line scores for it to)
