Well , because it is the language of ( as Woody Woodpecker said once ) MONEY, MONEY, MONEY
To girly:
So sorry, but you are totally, completely, and absolutely wrong. The MOST EXPRESSIVE language is Spanish.
English is a very cold language. No emotion, no passion, no feelings. It is good to learn sciences, though

English is currently one of the most widely spoken and written languages worldwide, with some 380 million native speakers. Only Chinese and Hindi have more native speakers while Spanish is similar in number. English is also the dominant member of the Germanic languages. It has lingua franca status in many parts of the world, due to the military, economic, scientific, political and cultural influence of the British Empire in the 18th, 19th and early 20th centuries and that of the United States from the early 20th century to the present.
Through the global influence of native English speakers in cinema, music, broadcasting, science, and the Internet in recent decades, English is now the most widely learned second language in the world, although other colonial languages such as French and Spanish retain much importance worldwide.
Because a working knowledge of English is required in many fields and occupations, education ministries around the world mandate the teaching of English to at least a basic level (see English as an additional language) . Also english is teached as a second Language in most schools

Mostly because of the enormous colonizing done by the British hundreds of years ago. This brought English to not only countries like the U.S. and Canada but also the Philippines, India. much of Africa, Australia, as well as many other places. Additionally in recent years, the U.S. has been one of the most influential countries. People in other countries know that by knowing English a lot of doors will open in their future because of the number of profitable markets found in the U.S. Because of this speaking English has gained a serious chic factor around the world. It's a status symbol. People in India who speak the language are considered to have a certain prestige status. It is also very common in languages like Hindi, Tagalog, Spanish, German, Dutch and a ton of others for the speaker to mix up their native language with words and phrases found originally in English. Just look at how popular Spanglish has become.

For one thing, it's the language of the most powerful country
on earth (right now). It's also the official language of science
and industry and the language that will bring the most financial opportunities to those who speak it. Otherwise it's
not the most widely spoken language. Just here, Canada,
British Isles and as a second language in mostly Northern
European countries. People that want to do business in
this country either learn to speak English or travel with an
interpreter.

I think alot of it has to do with history in the last 400 years. The British Empire in the 1600's and after became far flung around the world especially in business and commerce. Then as printing and later, technologies improved, (many of the developments in English speaking countries) it became valuable as it is today economically important to be able to communicate in the English language. Possibly another important factor is that English (poets-authors) developed a very extensive vocabulary making communication more precise than many other languages. The English language has 2-3 more accepted different words than some fairly common languages. For example 750,000 different words where many have less than 400,000 defined words. This treatise on this subject is in no way expert, but just a common person's view on the subject. Good luck on your "talk" with others on however you try to do so.

English is already accepted as the International language for
everything connected to, airplanes and flight and also naval
communications.
Wherever danger is involved and communication is necessary, a common language is essential. Without it the results could be fatal.
As more and more World organisations are formed, more and more people, feel the need for a common language.
It is logical to utilise the one that is already, the most commonly used one.
In the past , other things have been tried, Esperanto being the most notable, but still not as acceptable as English.

There are two reasons, first the British Empire was the largest in terms of dispersion to ever exist. Second, there was a conscious effort to spread English in the 19th century by the English. The idea was that if you control the language you control what people can think.
Supporting this is the fact that the US has been the dominant industrial power since 1945 and as such the waning of the British Empire did not see a reduction in English, rather it encouraged its spread.

The English colonizers imposed their language on so many places that it just became such an international language that everyone speaks it now.
Lol to the person above, English is definitely not the most expressive. AND it is true, the English rarely know many languages.. usually french if they are lucky but that's about it.
no need for long boring explanations, its that simple.

Consider the spread of the English Empire. Also the stepchild of England (America) has had some influence in the world as well. I would imagine the natural resources and resulting trade that ensues can be an attractive incentive for learning a language.
