Who are we repenting to? If we sin against our neighbor do we just shut our door build a bigger fence and repent to Jesus alone?

Midge, I asked exactly where in the Bible does it say that only Jesus can forgive sins. If it is not in the Bible what/who is your authority on this?

Thank you Aahotep.
Now i can find the basis for this American myth. Jesus did impart as some have pointed out here His Spirit to us so that we have the power that He had. Is there any stronger basis for this belief out there?
Oh this is the scripture that she cited:
21The Pharisees and the teachers of the law began thinking to themselves, "Who is this fellow who speaks blasphemy? Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
22Jesus knew what they were thinking and asked, "Why are you thinking these things in your hearts? 23Which is easier: to say, 'Your sins are forgiven,' or to say, 'Get up and walk'? 24But that you may know that the Son of Man has authority on earth to forgive sins...." He said to the paralyzed man, "I tell you, get up, take your mat and go home." 25Immediately he stood up in front of them, took what he had been lying on and went home praising God. 26Everyone was amazed and gave praise to God. They were filled with awe and said, "We have seen remarkable things to

Only God can forgive sins is what the Scripture says but that is not to discount the fact that Jesus has made man part of the Body of Christ who is God. Therefore when he blew on the Apostles and said "Receive the Holy Spirit, whose sins you shall forgive, shall be forgiven and whose sins you shall bind will be bound." It was at that point then that when the Apostles and through the laying on of hands in ordination of the priests they all then were able to forgive sins.

Jesus saves and God forgives. Luke 23:34 "FATHER, forgive them because they do not know what they are doing" (words of Christ). Now, if you can muster up the courage or if your emotions and heart tell you to do so, you can go and apologize to the person you offended and ask them to forgive what you did. But the ultimate forgiveness comes only from the Father. With free will at work and hate rampant in society, your brother may not want to forgive you but God will. And once he does, the misdeed is forgotten.

Hebrews 9:22 says that " without the shedding of blood, there is no remission of sins." There is no greater symbol of forgiveness than Jesus' shed blood on the cross of calvary. If this person is your brother or sister in Christ you should care if they have something against you. Maybe it's legitimate. Maybe not. But either way, you should care enough to find out. For forgiveness is the only way to God's working power in our lives.

OK, you've gotten confused here... if I wrong somebody, I'd better ask her/him to forgive me. But all they're doing is forgivng me for hurting their feelings or whatever.
They're certainly not forgiving me of having committed a sin. I have to ask God for that.
Jesus said to the paralyzed man, "Your sins are forgiven", and the Pharisees were appalled. "Who can forgive sins but God alone?"
Exactly Jesus' point. That's why He said it.

We are to go to "our brother" and ask forgiveness if we have offended them because God said in the bible that he will not forgive us if we will not forgive others. God's forgivess is what saves us from our sins, but we still have to work things out with each other.

It doesn't. Jesus specifically passed that power on to His disciples after the ressurection.
John 20:
[21] Jesus said to them again, "Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you."
[22] And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit.
[23] If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained."
Cheers :-)

Actually it says that through Christ our sins are forgiven. So through faith in the Savior and his atonement, living the commandments, being baptized and constant repentance and prayer we can enter the Kingdom.
