My dog usually goes everywhere with us, especially since I've been working from my home full time. But lately he anticipates it TOO much. He gets in the van and whines and shakes with anticipation. His manners go downhill and he looses 'good boy manners'. last time, He whined almost constantly making noise until I have a headache. I was SO grumpy with him and he knew he was in trouble, but just couldn't control himself.. he was SO excited. After we got home he avioded me all day. Since then he hasnt' gone ANYWHERE with us. Does he know why?

NO. Animals are creatures of habit and association. They do not have reasoning ability.

He associated van with going somewhere. Now he probably associates van with getting yelled at and in trouble. He more than likely has no idea what it was about, and is avoiding you and the van because he displeased you, doesn't know why, and doesn't want to do it again. Plus his feelings are probably hurt. It's like someone putting a wet blanket (figure of speech) over something you are really exited about.

He's was just being an over-excited kid about going bye-bye. I would try to make it up to him, and let him realize that he was just being a dog. And don't yell at him for it. No, he doesn't understand. If you wanted a quiet dog, you should have got a quiet dog. Since you have one that's gets excited about going someplace with you, accept that that is the way he is.

probably has forgotten by now.

you can't hold a grudge with an animal any more than you can hold a grudge with a 3 year old. they just don't have the memory capacity or the forethought for this.

if you no long wish to take him with while traveling then you need to supplement his old activity for a new one.

give him a nice bone to chew on with praise and then leave the house while he is munching. you can find a few different things for him to do to take his mind off of you leaving without him.

he does know you are leaving without him and that he used to go, that he is capable of understanding buy why, I think you are giving him more credit than he is due.

if you feel sorry and would like to bring him you need to get into a routine as to when and how long the travel will be. The you won't be inclined to be upset with him when he tries to go all the time, which is what he was used to.

he love you mom, give him alittle support and understanding.

I don't know if he knows why, but he probably realizes he's not going out anymore for a ride in the car.
