It totally depends on the situation. If I'm in public, I take a deep breath and count to 10. If I'm still mad when I get to 10 (which I'm usually not), I'm calm enough to say something civil and resolve the conflict peacefully.
If I'm at home/among friends/relatives, I try to do the same thing, but it is more difficult as I am around people I know. I tend to not take their crap as much as I do from strangers (ironic, isn't it?). I will normally push a lot to the side before I actually say something, but I really need the cooling off period b/c I tend to have a sharp tongue.

You need to learn self control. Take a deep breath and do not immediately react. Smile.

Nothing pisses off a person who is trying to get your goat more than when it does not affect you in the least, at least outwardly.

If in a situation that becomes heated, this will also benefit you with any bystanders or police if it gets that far.

The person who is in control and not looking like a crazy person is usually the one with the most credibility. It is a good talent to have and to practice.

Depends on who it is. If it's just some random person that has done something that gets to me I step back and ask myself if this person matters enough to me to be bothered by them. Usually they don't. If it's someone close to me they can usually tell they've pissed me off so I don't have to blow up at them. We'll have a heated discussion and sometimes argue but there isn't any need to go ballistic.

Dearie, I remember what my Mom always told me..."when you go to get even, you lower yourself to that person's level and that's NOT where you want to be!!!" I remember that I am a lady and act accordingly. I can still "Think" of some really horrible incidents for the other person, but I show my maturity by staying calm, never raising my voice, never using profanity, and not allowing myself to be "baited" into a shouting match (or worse). When I walk away, I KNOW I am the winner!
