- there's oncology, geriatric, labor and delivery. You make great money and can work part-time if you'd like.

When I'm in the hospital, inevitably I get some good nurses and some... shall we say, "less good" nurses. It has nothing to do with book knowledge. It has to do with skill, experience, and personality. I don't expect my nurse to know my illness or my medications better than I do. I'm the patient, I call the shots. But I have tremendous respect and appreciation for a nurse who can anticipate my day-to-day needs, who does the little things to alleviate my anxieties, and, of course, who can hit a vein on the first try!
A nurse who truly cares can make a big difference. As for external respect and appreciation, I don't know, probably not. You'll have to base your decision on the internal rewards.

It's a bit of a hard question to answer, coming from a family of nurses and being one myself, I have to say that there are times that you are appreciated, there's nothing quite like seeing the face of a relative who sees thier loved one has improved.
But, you will always get the ignorant few who turn you bitter towards human kind when things go wrong or they don't understand, there will always be that patient who spits at you and calls you rude names and incompitent, but they are the few....mostly the look of gratitude on most of patients faces makes up for it.
If you want to do it, then go for it, but expect rough with smooth.
Good luck :)

They are very much needed. They do need to be appreciated. Most nurses do a hell of a lot more than the doctors. A good nurse will be respected for what he or she does.

I read somewhere recently that nurses are respected or the actual word may have been "trust"..anyway they are trusted more than clergy!!
I was impressed, but it's how I feel myself.
