It could very well be caused from a number of things. However, I am for sure about two of them, because I myself suffer from this iritating disorder. One of them is caused from "Rheumatoid Arthritis" in which I suffer from. I am an active walker...but these past three years, since I've been diagnosed with rheumatiod arthirtis, everytime after a walk I'll come home with swollen legs & feet! And here I am trying to keep fit, and come home feeling much heavier, than when I first left the house, right. Than later I found out its due to my arthritis, that this occurs, but it does eventually go down, (the swelling does). Than there's also, another way to get swollen legs, and throughout the whole body for that matter, is: eating too much salt! This is not good, for anyone!! However, our bodies do need a certain amount of salt to survive, in life. But useing too much, isn't good for our bodies at all. See what happens is when we consume too much our bodies will take the salt and push it everywhere throughout the body to keep it away from our vital organs, not too jeaopardize them! Which is why when alot of people who are recovering from heart attacks, doctors usually will put them on strict diet's without salt in it! Because of this same reason, salt can become an enemy of sorts to our bodies, if consumeing too much of it !! And when it does try to keep it away from our vital organs it will push it throughout our legs arms, feet, and even our faces! Anywhere away from the heart lungs, liver, gall bladder and so on! So, therefore swelling will take place from the salt, and the more water we drink while indulging ourselves with more salt than our bodies can stand, the more swollen we get! Because water just makes the salt swell up like a balloon, in our bodies. I hope I was of some help to you. Smile!!!

Fluid retention due to poor kidney function for one reason or another. Or cardiovascular problems can cause the fluid retention.

Diuretics are given to reduce the excess water.

because they have too much fluid on board, because the veins in their legs are not as efficient in returning the blood up to the heart so fluid leaks out into the tissues, and because their heart doesn't pump as effectively as it should.
