It's fine to drive barefoot. In spite of persistent myths, there are NO laws against driving barefoot. Unfortunately, this myth is so common that even some cops believe it... but everyone who believes this please see source and stop spreading this falsity. Some cops are convinced it's unsafe and even though they know it's not illegal may try to write her up for unsafe or reckless driving, however please see the second and third link in the source, for two sites (one from the Michigan PD, one from an Australian newspaper) making it clear that driving barefoot is no more unsafe than many types of footwear that are regularly worn and could even be considered safer than many kinds of shoes.

No i do no longer think of that's illegitimate I force barefoot lots in the summer time when I placed on my sandals. I often take my sandals off my ft when I get into my motor vehicle, and that i comprehend i would be driving for a minimum of an hour, and that i force barefoot.

I think your wife is probably a very safe and cautious driver and I don't think it will make her a dangerous driver if she drives barefoot. My mom does it all the time and she is an extremely safe driver and has never gotten into a car wreck. I think the idea of her getting into a car accident is what is making you nervous but she should be OK.

I would like to know where it is that people are getting all these "illegal to drive without shoes" responses?

There is TONS of info online stating it is not against the law in ANY US state.

If you do a Yahoo search for Urban Myths & driving barefoot, you will find many people who have researched this. Not one US state has a law regarding barefoot driving. In Alabama, they forbid a barefoot MOTORCYCLE driver, but that is not a car.

Please do research in the "Search" area below before stating it is illegal in your state. That answer is false.

There is no law in any of the 50 states or DC that requires footwear to be worn when driving a car. (And those of you who claim there is, please post a link to the law. I haven't seen one yet!)

A few states do require footwear when operating a motorcycle.

As to the safety aspect of it, the state would have to prove that driving barefoot was the proximate cause of any accident. That would be pretty hard to do, since it doesn't directly affect your ability to control a vehicle. Quite to the contrary, improper footwear such as heavy boots or high-heeled shoes CAN cause a loss of control much more so than driving barefoot.

I drive barefoot all of the time and never had a problem. It feels the same as driving with sneakers on in my opinion, only you have better grip.

Personally I drive barefoot when I have sandals on because it is more comfortable. I would let let your wife try it on on smaller roads before actually getting out there on the open road.

I guess it really doesn't matter if she's comfortable doing so. It certainly doesn't hurt anything. I personally don't like to be barefoot unless I'm swimming or on the beach.
