We just bought our first house!!! We will be moving in at the end of June, so I am going to start planning how to decorate. First step.....get the kids situated.
We have a 4 year old girl who loves bugs. I found a pretty quilt in a range of purple's and also a sheer purple curtain. I am looking for any great ideas, space saving tips, or decorating info.
We have another girl who is 1 1/2. I have a Strawberry Shortcake bedspread and I made matching curtains (they were my 4 year olds).
Both rooms are pretty small, but they both have one window. We are on a very tight budget, so it'll be alot of do-it-myself. I am happy to paint, build things, and I sew. I'd love to hear the cute ideas you have seen or how you have decorated.

4 year old -
1] paint the walls one of the colors in the quilt, and the trim a second color, or the purple you are already using.
2] copy some of the bugs from the quilt on the wall, using the same colors.
3] repeat some of these colors in large accessories [ chair, lamp, rug, storage bins ] or small accessories [ lampshade, picture frames, trash can ].
4] make sure she has storage boxes in 'her' color for all her stuff - Barbies, etc, that are hers. Any toys she plays with in her rooom should all be in the same color box, say purple. You can write 'dolls, stuffed animals, dress up' on the boxes.
5] do same for younger sister, say with pink boxes. [ no bugs - strawberries, maybe? ]
6] 'community' toys, games, etc should be in a third color,[yellow?] and in the family room. A bookcase big enough to hold books, games, and a few boxes or milkcrates is a definite plus, in one or all the rooms [ that divided bookcase looks like a great idea, especially if you paint it to match the rooms ]
P.S. My niece has two girls the same age as yours - and the older one loves bugs! and purple!

Hi there
Im just going to be posting random links for you to check out. You can get some ideas
Lady Bug Knobs
http://marketplace.hgtv.com/View_Listing.asp?Lid=2251-126339
I would do maybe stencils or if you are good and free hand doing your own bugs and such on the walls kinda like this.....

This room is soooo cute. With the purple in mind....add darker pinks, and that pretty light green is adorable......Look at that rug!!! I think add some flowers with some cute girly bugs. Bugs dont have to be ugly they can be cute too

Do you have an Ikea nearby?? You could even find these or something similar for sale at a yard sale or even craiglist http://phoenix.craigslist.org/ Make sure you change ur city and state......try this for any used nice furniture and for the unit below
This is a really cute shelving unit

I have this one for my daughters room but I spray painted it that green color and it turned out great. You could even build something like this if you have the know how. I put those little baskets with the lining in them. You could actually just buy some cheap baskets and buy the fabric and sew them to fit the basket size you get. Im sure there are some directions online on DIY or HGnet for sewing instructions.
Hope this helps :o) Good Luck

Hi there!
Happy about your home, but as said you can go for a theme for the kids but make sure you dont make any major changes for the room as the kids grow they would want a change in the room style and may cost you, dont do any thing which is fixed, keep things flexible to change later when you like, helps your budget also,
try this: http://makemyhome.blogspot.com/2007/05/interior-design-decorating.html
good luck

Congratulations on your first home. One thing I do have to say about the daughter who loves bugs is...WOW. Here's an idea...They sell plastic bugs at many dollar stores. I know this because my daughter had a project at school and covered a t-shirt with them. She also had to write a poem and won 1st place!. Anyhow, a good idea would be to purchase those bugs and place them on the wall throughout her bedroom.

My daughter had a BRATZ comforter set. I matched the colors in the set and the painted simple curls & swirls in the top corners of her walls and the top corners of her windows and doorway. I also included little purple pasiley designs. Then I took a bag of small jewels and glued them on the wall with Elmer's School Glue. It dries clear and they pop right off very easily without damaging the drywall. I also painted her name real big above her closet in the same grafitti type style that the BRATZ use, and I even put a halo over one letter in her name.
Look at what you have in their current quilts and bedspreads and feed off of that. I already see a big round lady bug with six black legs and a pair of black antenna....that would be easy to draw with pencil on the wall and then just paint in.
