It is your life. Do what you want, what will make you happy. Yes, theater is a very hard field to get into, but that doesn't mean it is a waste of time. Just make sure you get a minor in something else...i.e business. It's a good thing to fall back on.
The medical field is a lot harder, and you'll never have a life. If it is something that interests you, think about it long and hard. If it is only your parents wanting you to make lots of cash, well then, I think you know this is not the right choice for you!

Not to poo-poo your idea, but your parents are sort of right. Get a degree that you can use and do acting in your spare time. I lived in LA and tried to break in as an actor, and what I discovered is that the industry is very closed to newcomers and new ideas. Your best bet is to do it as a side gig, because you love it, and if it turns into something, that's even better, but you'll still be doing something you love without the frustration of relying on gigs to pay your bills.

I'm also not assuming that because I couldn't break in, you couldn't. Charlize Theron got an agent by throwing a tantrum in a check cashing store, so you really never know. But there's something totally disheartening about working really hard, being better than a lot of people, being easy to work with and doing what you're told and still not getting jobs.

So, again I advise to get a degree in something you'd enjoy and do acting on the side, as a hobby. You can major/minor in theatre, but you'll be a more free actor and enjoy it more knowing that your paycheck/rent/next meal doesn't depend on the Critic from the Hollywood reporter understanding your interpretation of the character.

Hope this didn't come off bitter, I'm really not. :)

If you pay for your college completely, do whatever you wish.

If your parents help pay, consider a compromise. I wanted to be writer, but with that there are no guarantees of publication so I majored in English and Secondary Education and took as many writing courses as I could while reading a lot and studying to teach writing to teenagers. It worked out great.

You could major in theater and minor in communications for example. Communications grads work in journalism, television, news, pr, etc - all fields that could get you in closer to acting. Of course, no matter what you major in, do as much college or local theater as you can to hone your skills.

you could always major in something they approve of and minor in theater or act in your spare time. If yo end up making it then good for you. If you don't you always have something to fall back on
