either a golden retriever or a black lab. be careful though, some goldens have terrible skin allergies (mine does). make sure you get one, if you decide to, from a trustworthy breeder.

Is there aright answer to this. We all know what not to get, other than that most breeds are ok depending on the age of your children. We've got toddlers and opted for a retriever just before we started having the kids. It's very play full and tolerant of little people and was very protective when they were newborn. We had to hold the dog back when the midwife made my eldest cry doing the pin prick on her foot to get blood! However in hind site I wish we'd opted for something a little smaller (and with short hair, I'm forever hoovering!) My 3 year old wants to hold the dog on it's lead but there's no hope our dog's to big and would pull her over.
As for the big garden fab but don't be fooled in to believing this lets you off the walking! My dog lays in the sun most of the day and doesn't get active until we take her out. Big or small a dog still needs plenty of excerise.

I would have to agree with most people and say the golden retriever or labrador. These dogs seem to have a wonderful temprement, and are a very popular family pet. Big dogs need plenty of exercise, although with you having a big garden and children, I'm sure whatever dog you decide on, will be kept agile. You can also get a lovely family dog at your local RSPCA or dog home. There are lots of lovely dogs with good temperments, just waiting to be part of a loving family. These dogs end up in dog homes through no fault of their own. Sometimes you get quite alot of pedigree dogs at these dog places. Crossbreeds can be just as loving. The main thing is that they are good with you and your children. Whatever you decide, i hope your dog brings lots of happiness to you and your family. I have a Lhasa Apso, and I would not be without her. She is very protective of me and so loyal and loving. I adore her with all my heart.

Definately a labrador! We have two with a fairly big family and a nice sized garden. They're so friendly and are always loyal. Easy to train too! If you hate housework then maybe a Labradoodle as they have been bred with poodles so that they do not malt but they may need serious hair cuts every so often!
Good luck with you new dog!!

I would recommend a Lab we have 2 and my kids are 2 and 4 we got are first one when my son was 1 1/2 and they are best friends. They love to play in the water and to run. I will never have any other kind of dog but a Lab.

I would most definatley recommend a boxer dog, they have a very good reputation with children and they are very energetic. We have one and there is nothing he loves more than playing in the garden with my 2 kids 7&3 year olds. He gives us all so much enjoyment and he loves to rough and tumble aswell.

Well, I have owned both Golden Retrievers and Labradors, but I would recommend a Labrador. Goldens shed a lot and Labs don't. They are pretty much the same, hardy, bold, sweet, playful, fun loving, just great family pets, but if you don't want to deal with shedding and sneezing, get a Labrador Retriever.

I think a Labrador would be good. They are usually placid and good with kids. You'll need a big garden as well but they still need their walkies! I had 2 boys and a Lab when they were young and it was just great. He was so gentle with them and they used to tease him to death but he never had a go- he just put up with everything they could throw at him. Bitches are often good with kids too.

I have found that any dog that is or has in it's genetic line any Labrador Retriever in it is sweet tempered and gentle. Of course, a lot of any dog's personality depends on you and your willingness to do what it takes to be the pack leader, the alpha of your 'pack'. I highly reccomend watching 'The Dog Whisperer' starring Cesar Millan. He has the best, most effective method for working/living with dogs I've ever seen. Even I, who am a cat person, can now live with dogs and love them. Check it out online at:

Blue roan cocker spaniels are wonderful dogs. My kids have grown up with them and they are so soft and gentle. My parents have also just bought a black cocker which is equally as soft! Do be a little cautious around the ginger ones as they can be slightly temprementle.
Its also worth remembering that dogs learn a lot from their owners, so teach them well!!

I am a big fan of golden retrievers as family pets. Large and can handle rough play, easy to train, very affectionate, very people oriented and very intelligent. Just make sure it gets plenty of attention, is allowed to be in the house with its family and plenty of exercise.
