no, just because someone gives you a gift you do not have to give that person one back. But you should send that person a thank you card.

No - the purpose of a gift is to give someone the joy of knowing that you thought of them and wanted them to enjoy whatever you're giving them, it is NOT to get something in return.

If you learn to give gifts and never expect something back that will make it even more fun when you DO get something in return!

Note: it would be in proper etiquette for the recipient to send a thank you note or at least make it entirely clear in some other fashion how grateful they are that they thought of you - that works for when you receive gifts too! Even if you don't like the object, you can honestly tell the person you're grateful they thought of you and still be entirely honest.

Nope. I give gifts for the joy in giving--not to see what I'll get in return. If you give a gift to someone, etiquette says they should be gracious and accept. That's all--nothing more.

I believe a gift is something given freely and expecting nothing in return. If something is expected in return, it is then a trade, or a sale, not a gift.
The same is true for telling a person how they can use a gift. If there are ANY strings attached, it is NOT a gift. (i.e. "You may have this, but you must display at such.")

Of course not. Gifts are given because the giver WANTS to, not because they expect anything in return.

NO.

Gifts are given without strings attached. If you give a gift, they should give you a "thank you." That is it...
