Because they do attack unprovoked and rip ppl to shreds. There is a lot of media to back this up.

I own two American Pit Bull Terriers and they are wonderful! They are the sweetest things! They LOVE everyone, ESPECIALLY children! They both think they are lap dogs and they are scared of frogs and squirrels (really vicious.. huh).. lol! They are so smart, sweet, loyal, loving, gental, tolerant, devoted, obedient, funny, and almost human like in their emotions and expressions! The American Pit Bull Terrier was the #1 family dog in the US during first part of the 20th century and they are one of the most stable people-friendly dogs in existence! The National Canine Temperament Testing Association tested 122 breeds, and Pit Bulls placed the 4th highest with a 95% passing rate!

To answer your question.. People think that all "pit bulls" are bad because they believe all of the false stories that they hear in the media and all of the crazy "pit bull" myths over the FACTS! People fear what they dont know and ALOT of people are just simply uneducated about these wonderful breeds. It really is such a shame though. So many people are missing out on the wonderful dogs! : ( Every 10 years or so a new breed of dog is victimized by irresponsible owners, breeders, bad media coverage, and now its the "pit bulls" turn. In the 70’s it was the German Shepherd, the 80’s was the Dobermans turn, the 90’s Rottweilers and "pit bulls" had all the bad press, and now its the "pit bulls" time to suffer again. And, unfortunately, in a few years it will be another breed that will be in the spotlight. : (

Because when they do bite, they exert 3,000 psi (pds per sq in). Compare that to the Yorkie next door and you pick which one you'd rather have playing around your kids. That being said, I have been "attacked" by my neighbor's Chihuahua and my mother-in-law's Maltese more times than I care to remember.

Pit bulls can be well socialized and loving dogs, but the mainstream image is not a positive one. One, the thug culture has picked pit bulls as their symbol of intimidation, much like the pirates picked a skull and crossbones. If you own one, you are making a statement to the outside world and there's not much you can do about it. Two, they are also used in illegal fighting rings in many areas. Not their fault, but it does make the non-pit bull owning public a little queasy about the breed. After all, you don't see them fighting Labradors or even German Shepards. The breed has been historically bred for protection and nothing is inherently wrong with that, but when criminals adopt the animal as their mascot and "entertainment", the dog gets an image problem. Three, while they are usually sweet puppies, they need to be socialized with people and other dogs. Every dog owner should be aware of this need for socialization and other aspect of raising any type of dog. However, because of the inherent power of a pit, I would not recommend them for a first time dog owner. Four, if you own one or any kind of dog, please use responsibility and common sense. Have them spayed or neutered, keep them socialized, and invest in some dog training lessons.

And, dude, use punctuation! I had a hard time reading your question!

Sadly because people are ignorant and the press loves to sell dog bite stories.

People do this to just about any breed of large, intelligent dog.

In the 1960's it was the German Shepherd. If you watch reruns of the old Lassie show - you will see that all the "wolves" that attacked Lassie were German Shepherds.

In the 1970's it was the Doberman Pincer - see the Daring Dobermans - a B film about a pack of specially trained Dobermans who pulled off robberies.

In the 1980s and 1990s it was the Rottweiler - (there are jokes about Rotties- even Princess Dianna Spencer called Camilla a Rottweiler)

In the 2000s it's the Pitt Bull.

Too bad because I've seen an awful lot of pitties - and to a one - they were angels.

People tend to think that pitbulls are bad dogs because of the images shown to them through the media. There is always some story about a pitbull attacking a child or someone else. I personally do not believe that all pitbulls are bad. It's the owners that are bad. Not all pitbulls are bred for fighting like a previous poster mentioned. When I was growing up my family got a pitbull as a pet and he was the sweetest dog in the world. When he passed away we got another one and then another one. My family loves these dogs. Our dogs have never been viscious animals. They have always been playful and loving. I think that having a pitbull is kind of like raising a kid. If you treat him badly and encourage him to fight as a means of survival, then of course they will end up being the sort of dogs you see on the five o'clock news. However, if you show them love and affection, then they will grow up and exhibit these same traits. Unfortunately, the world only sees the negative side of these playful and loving dogs.

Judge the deed, not the breed!

It is true that different dog breeds are intended for different purposes. Pit Bulls and other bully breeds were bred for fighting, just as GSD's and other herding breeds (because they are bred to herd- basically to chase critters that run) have an intense prey drive. These are genetic tendencies that the dogs are born with BUT no dog is a "natural born killer." The drive to fight, or herd, or track, or retrieve has to be cultivated in the dog by how it is handled and trained.

Just as GSD's aren't born knowing how to do agility or schutzhund, Pit Bulls aren't born knowing how to fight. The instincts and drive has to be brought out by training and treatment.

If a Pit Bull is properly socialized and trained to be a family pet, a Pit Bull can be as loving and trusting a dog as any other. If a "docile" breed such as a Labrador is improperly socialized or abused, it can be transformed into a dangerous dog.

As a person who owns two "protection breed" dogs (a Belgian Malinois and a GSD/Chow mix) I know how easy it is for people to characterize them as aggressive dogs simply because Malinois and GSD's are widely used in police and security work. My girls are not aggressive dogs but socialization and being responsible with your dog is the key. Being aware of what your dog was bred to do helps, so you know where his/her instincts and strengths lie, but ANY dog can be either a "good" dog or a "bad" dog depending on its socialization and how it is cared for and trained.

BTW- German Shepherds (GSD's) are NOT "mixed with wolves." Neither are Belgian Malinois or any of the other herding breeds.

Just a quick history lesson, pit bulls were not bred to be mean they were bred because they were the most trainable and dependable. Its not the dog that bad its the reputation, and the reputation became from bad owners who dont know how to care for animals. If you train your pit to be mean when they are young thats what are going to learn, i had a red nose that mixed with a blue and it was the most gentle animal in the world, it was intimdating because of its size but it would rather roll around on the floor with you then growl, or bite. mainly through its weight around as a joke. On his walks he would just lean to one side and then the other bcause he pretty much knew i had to follow or fall over. He was a big jokster. I love him to death.

It is all because of a bad word of mouth. I have heard the same about dobermans, rotts, and other supposively "agressive breeds". I don't believe any of the crap that it is just "wired into their brains". Any dog can be agressive. It all depends on how they are raised. I have had experience on both side of the stereotype hype, and having changed my mid after meeting a couple sweeties that would melt your heart. Everyone says that it is bad to stereotype people, why should dogs be any different? Treat each dog as a single case sinerio I believe.

Think about it. You can have a dog that you've never trained such as to herd sheep and before you know it they are doing what was bred into them. It's the same thing with pit bulls. They're bred to fight and that's what they do and even if they don't right now one of these days something will snap in them and someone will get hurt.

Part of the reason is because people don't ever stop talking about it. Another reason is that there is an ignorant back yard breeder on every block makin a bad situation worse. And they are all crying about how unfair it is... The dogs are the victims here brought into the world through greed and with no knowledge.

The old NO BAD DOGS, JUST BAD PEOPLE thing is not totally correct. Bad people produce bad dogs. Innocent puppies born from pedigrees of aggressive dogs at the hands of ignorant people. Some dogs are bad. It's in their genes. Not all.. but temperament is inherited and all these people who breed these dogs with no knowledge of whats behind them in the pedigrees are producing unpredictable dogs which = bad dogs.

The only reason people fear dogs is because of the "reputation" a certain breed might have. I have a rotty, and people fear him just for that reason alone. My dog is actually scared of cats, he would not hurt a fly! Don't be offended by people that act scared of your dog. Change their mind about the breed by showing them how nice of a dog you have!
