in all honesty, it depends on the use of the jeep.... I f you use it for towing, or heavy duty 4-wheeling, I recomend the 4.0... if it is a daily driver to and from work, the 2.8 will do fine. If you have to put a new engine in it anyway, definately the 4.0. I have an 89 cherokee and a 77 cj, and have had many other jeeps, and the 4.0 will fit in almost any jeep from about the 70's through the 2004 model, and were put in them. They will require some parts to be swapped, but not to dificult for someone that has any idea what they are doing with cars. The 4.0 is susseptiable to oil leaks after about 200,000 miles, but not much else.

It IS NOT practical to swap the 4 liter into a jeep that was not equiped with it. Your 2.8 is carburated and the 4.0 is fuel injected. You would have to install the complete wiring harness fuel tank lines, sensors, probably the transmission, they are different ect. This is a MAJOR project.
Now one other idea is go find the Chevrolet 3.4 liter v-6 used in 93-95 cameros. It is a bored and stroked 2.8 and will swap in MUCH easier with current intake system.

being a professional mechanic, and having already put a 4.0 in my86 cherokee I would not suggest that you attempt it.it means changing engine trans drive shaft, adding 2 computers replacing all wiring fuel tank and pump front core support radiater condenser hood and latches and alot of small stuff that didn't make the list.repair your 2.8 or use another gm engine. if you have more questions on your jeep email me

The 4.0L inline 6 engines are more reliable and more durable than the old 2.8L v6 engines. Those V6 engines were prone to mechanical problems plus they were carbureted which caused problems at high altitudes and when climbing or offroading. The 4.0L 6cyl. engines are fuel injected and are getting pretty descent gas mileage also.
