Have you ever heard an atheist smash their thumb with a hammer?
They act like God is deaf not to hear their rants and raves, they yell so loud at Him and His Son.
I'm not a Christian and I'm not Bible thumping,
it's just a humorous observation.

When I first read your question, I thought, 'Wow, this guy is a Goddamn idiot. Christ Almighty, he need professional help'.
But then, when I thought, 'By Odin's beard, why does the great Gods of Yahoo allow him to dwell here in the Holy land of Q & A? Please Allah, please smite him and drop a stick of dynomite in the infidel's underpants', I then realized how I was putting too much blame on all religions rather than blame myself.
It's uncanny how you think so much like I do. Thank God, Allah, Buddah, Jesus, Odin, Mother Nature, Lady Luck, Michael Jackson, Rosie O'Donnell and all the Gods too numerous to mention, that you are with us oh great Mental.

f I had a child and they didn't love me, I wouldn't lock them up in my closet of eternal flame to make them kick and scream and cry and burn in torture and anguish and suffering until the end of time. Even if they committed a crime like murder, I wouldn't do that. I couldn't. I'd call the police on them, sure, but I wouldn't do sick, horrible tortures. Unlike god. That's the kind of crap you'd expect from an amoral sociopathic sadist. I'm more moral than god. You're more moral than god. I'd sooner worship you. So no, I wouldn't worship such a god. I'd much rather be in hell doing pot, having gay sex, constantly be partying in a pub with rock blasting everywhere.

Every language has it's own set of "impact words" to express themselves, but I disagree that people always use God's name in vain or Jesus' name for that matter.

On NPR, they did a study replacing words from famous quotes in history that contained familiar swear words and replaced them with somewhat equivalent "non-swear" words and they weren't rated at nearly the same emotional impact. For example, when Rhett Butler said to Scarlett "Frankly my dear, I don't give a ...." didn't have nearly the same meaning or intensity when it was replaced with other words. I don't really think that people are ranting at God, just expressing themselves that they feel very strongly about something.

My whole family was Pagan and my father used to curse, Jesus, jesus, jesus when he was mad. But I would think that a good atheist would not know other characters from the Bible to use in place of the top three.

Maybe it has something to do with many of us being raised in Christian families, in a culture that has a majority of Christians?
Personally, I see it as an indication of where Atheists are coming from in this country (Christianity).

I've never used God or Jesus in a curse

I did use "Oh my butternuts!" once. That got a good bit of laughs from the people around me

My catholic & christian mother always used this one:

"Jesus, Mary & Joseph"

For the non christian curser: it might have something to do with the way they flock to church when tragedy strikes and disappear after the smoke clears. It's like they believe in God for the painful moment and the belief dissapates with the pain.

I have heard Christians use some serious nasty cursing in the name of God and Jesus Christ!

So next time I hit my thumb with a hammer I should say something like "Curse you, Paul!" ?

Such words and phrases are part of the English language in such circumstances. Not to use them when appropriate would be as weird as doing all your cursing in ancient Greek.
