I'm on zoloft and I had a cold and wanted some relief. I asked my doctor if I could take a cold medicine while on zoloft and she stated yes. My boyfriend states that I can't take any cold medicine while on zoloft but I haven't found anything that says that.

Which one has the medical credentials, the Dr. or boyfriend? You can take cold medicine as long as it doesn't contain alcohol.

Unless your boyfriend is a medical doctor, listen to your doctor, not him.

Zoloft is one of the newer, selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI) formulas. They work by limiting the body's ability to re-absorb the serotonin that your body creates naturally, thereby making more of it available in your blood stream at any given time. Serotonin is the body's "feel good" chemical. SSRI's, in general, are very safe when used as directed, and having taken both SSRI's (including Zoloft) AND all kinds of cold medicines over the years, often at the same time, I can tell you from personal experience that the only thing that happens is a) you continue to have relief from depression, and b) you now have relief from your cold symptoms, too.

Some of the older classes of antidepressants that work differently from the SSRI's, like MOAO inhibitors, did sometimes interact negatively with "some" cold medicines, but most people rely on SSRIs now (that class includes Prozac, Effecor, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, etc.).

Hope this helps - and that you get over your cold soon!

Yeah, you can. You can't take cold medicine with a different type of antidepressant called an monoamine oxidase inhibitor. Zoloft is an selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, so it is a-ok. Feel better.

I was warned by the pharmacist to not take over the counter cold medicines such as Sudafed when I was on Effexor.

Ask your pharmacist, I think your doctor is wrong. I am on Wellbutrin and I all can take is behind the counter sinus meds. There is a particular drug you cannot mix with anti-depressants. You can just call them, they will tell you.

It is best to listen to your Dr's advice. This is the person who knows more. If you asked for the Dr.'s advise then take it. Your boyufriend may mean well, but that doesn't mean that he knows the medical field such as medication like your Dr. does.
