It does imply that there is a huge lack of respect. I personally am a Lady, a woman, a Mrs., and a person. I am not a stranger's honey, baby, sugar, princess or sweetie. Though with my family and close friends those names apply. Also, ask the women that are taking offense what they want you to refer to them as, and it may just be their name. I once dated a guy who called every girl "kitten", because we are all so soft and cuddley....so he said. It was because he didn't want to get names confused, and he found out you put several "kittens" together their claws come out......
Peace.

A more appropriate word to refer to a woman may be woman. Using the term lady is my preference. Do not call a woman a girl or a chick or a ***** or a ho.

It all depends on the context in which you are calling a women a chick. Advice, if she doesn't like it, don't use it. The appropriate word to use when you refer to a women is just that "woman" or by their first name, that always helps.

Personally, I'm not offended by the word. I call other females "chick" all the time.
The words that do chap my @$$ are broad, skirt, babe and gal. Get real.
You have a lot of varied answers so far...a good rule of thumb is to feel out the enviornment first before you use it. To some, it's cool, to others it isn't.
Thank you for asking, though! That's refreshing!!

It's demeaning. A "chick" is, after all, a fluffy and defenseless baby bird. It needs protecting. A woman is a human being, just like you.
And it seems to me that "woman" is a perfectly appropriate word to use to refer to a woman, don't you think?

I don't get offended. You may leave a bad impression as there are better words to use. I will just think you are a person that lacks refinement, class or education.

"Chicks" implies that they are lightminded airheads. Try "Ladies" next time. It's also a very outdated expression.
