Gimp is good. Photoshop is the industry standard. Is it worth the money? Yes if you are planning to enter the graphic art industry. But if you just want to do some photo editing, stick with the gimp. Ya just can't beat the price.

GIMP does quite a bit of the same stuff but, in our experience, we really needed one surprisingly simpleminded thing right off the bat that Photoshop has, which is Bridge, which gives you an array display of the photos in a folder. See, we download a bunch of photos from the camera all at once, and the camera of course doesn't give the photos meaningful names, so it surely helps to be able to find a photo by looking at the thumbnail then double-clicking and popping it into Photoshop.

Photoshop also comes with ImageReady, which has some extra Website-prep tools I find essential for my website development purposes.

You may find here, among the pros in other answers, better info on photography dealings, so I will leave it to them to give you the answer more worthy of "best answer" points...

I recommand you to use Google Picasa to manage and edit your pictures.

Picasa is software that helps you instantly find, edit and share all the pictures on your PC. Every time you open Picasa, it automatically locates all your pictures (even ones you forgot you had) and sorts them into visual albums organized by date with folder names you will recognize. You can drag and drop to arrange your albums and make labels to create new groups.

Picasa makes sure your pictures are always organized. Picasa also makes advanced editing simple by putting one-click fixes and powerful effects at your fingertips. And Picasa makes it a snap to share your pictures ¨C you can email, print photos at home, make gift CDs, instantly share via Hello™, and even post pictures on your own blog.

free download in here, just have a try:
