Dachshunds are very good pets. My grandmother had one when I was little named Goober and he was very playful. He also was a good guard dog, barking when ever there was noises outside. On the other hand though you would have to be careful introducing it to your pit/mix because they tend to bug other animals with their playfulness. Labs are also great dogs that are very loyal but the tend to be stranger friendly. Huskies are loyal and also great watch dogs. If you want a smaller breed I would go with the Dachshund but if you want something bigger either the husky or the lab would also make great companions.

Dachshunds are wonderful little dogs. Many people have the Miniatures, but I personally prefer the Standards because I have Siberian Huskies and the Standards are more "sturdy". The males can be close to 30 lbs.
Personalities vary with the coat type, actually. I have Longhairs, and they are a relatively mellow, snuggly lot, as opposed to the Wires and Smooths, who tend to be more energetic/terrier-like in personality.
Pros: Good watch dogs (bark alert). Good snugglers. Energetic and playful.
Cons: Lots of barking. Can be difficult to housebreak. Unwilling to recognize their own size (my 5 month old puppy tried to charge an 80 lb. Bouvier Des Flandres at a show last weekend). Lots of barking. Can have back/spine problems, especially if poorly bred and kept overweight. Lots of barking.
Regardless of which dog you choose, be sure to go to a responsible breeder. Start looking for breed info at akc.org . You might also consider adopting through a rescue or shelter!

I love the breed, think they are great! Know what you are getting into before you do commit to one. They are very sweet and love able. They were breed to be self thinkers so house breaking and training is hard but doable with time and patience. They do have delicate backs but as stated keep the weight off and limit their jumping, most doxies are very overweight, They will eat themselves to death so limit the food intake. They also are hounds so if they pick up a scent they will follow it until they become lost so a fenced backyard and leash are a must. Most like to sleep with their humans under the blankets. They will protect themselves so watching them around children are a must. They were breed to hunt badgers in Germany so some will go after small animals as instinct, however mine do get along with cats and other animals as that is what they are used to. I could write a book on them. Couldn't love that breed more but they are some work but well worth it. There is a book called Dachshunds for Dummies, good read

A dachshund is a lovable little mug, with a tendancy to yap and sometimes the most bullheaded little creature you'll ever come upon. Once he sights something he takes as prey--chipmunk, squirrel or cat--he'll follow it to the exclusion of all else, and once he determines it's up a tree or otherwise gone, he cheerfully waddles off to something else. They love to cuddle, love to burrow under covers and pillows, and are perfect lapdogs. Because of their thin coat, they get cold easily, and definitely do not like deep snow. They're good with kids and other dogs, cats and ferrets, but mice, rats and gerbils call forth the instinct to clear the house of vermin, which they will do rather proudly. If they don't get much interaction with people, they do get snappish and mean, but overall they love everything, and they'll announce what they find, too.

Dachshunds make wonderful pets! I have 5. They are quite comical. They are also very brave, they think they are much taller. They are also what is considered a "thinking" breed meaning they can figure things out on their own and they get smarter as they age.
The only drawback is their delicate backs but if you limit their jumping and keep ther weight down they are fine.
One of mine is a certified Therapy dog. He loves everyone. I also have one that was born without eyes. He gets along fine, enjoys life to the fullest, loves running in the yard with the others and is a very sweet dog.

I have two dachshunds right now. One is about to turn 2 at the end of the month. And my new one is just now 3 months.
They are both trained to use a doorbell. We placed a doorbell at the bottom of the back door. They just go and push it to use the bathroom. They are obviously very intelligent creatures.
I would suggest get minis. Mine are both. One is 14 pounds and the other right now is 5. She is probably going to be about 9. Make sure not to over feed them. And they are great!

I have a daschund and she is very loveable and comical. She will take off running through the house for no reason. They can be very snippy dogs if not trained properly especially with young children. You do have to be careful because they can develope back problems. They are good for inside because they have short hair and do not shed much.If you are not willing to put in the time to set boundaries with this dog then do not get one. They can be stubborn and hard headed. They do take time and attention but a well trained daschund makes a great pet and companion.

I personally dont ever want to own any other breed of dog except dachshunds. They are wonderful pets. They are so adorable and funny to watch. They are very loving and smart also. Also, dachshunds dont have "doggie odor" like other breeds of dogs have. You wont ever regret it if you decide to get a dachshund.

I love my Miniature Dachshund! He is 5 months old, and incredibly sweet!! I have heard about the back problems, but all dogs have some type of problem! They are barkers--but they are also calm, once they get out of the puppy stage!! My little bugger is getting big and jumps over the baby gates now, so cute!

I've had many dachsi's in my life and they can be a chore!! Most have a HUGE problem with house breaking....My dachsi loves to go outside during the day, and prefers paper at night. Paper training seems to be the most effective...They are also very territorial and will bark incredibly loud at every one that knocks and enters your home....My 12 year old little bro is barked at everyday, he lives here and still! If you decide to get one, obedience school is a wise investment for the average dachsi:) Hope that helps in your research!
