Because, with many, if and when they face a fear they are having to look at their own selfs very closely. When you are facing your own self. . . that person (your own self) looking back won't take any nonsense or let you " escape " that " fear ' that needs to be addressed. A person does not always want to have that accountability...so they choose not to face their own fears...which is looking at their own selfs.
Does a person want to open the book and learn or go out and play ? Go to school or stay out on the playground. By opening the book or keeping focused in the classroom a person learns and grows . . . Yet, the " playground " is more fun. So, which does a more underdeveloped person choose ? The playground.
When a person learns to like and love their own selves . . .their not so fearful of facing their own selfs.
Challenges..." fears " are uncomfortable and not fun to dwell in or face...yet to move past fears and meet your challenges...Standing at that higher ground found through facing ones " fears " . . . the view is stunning.

I don't know. I think vinslave and onelight has got the right of it, but it may be more than that... Perhaps fear can even be a USEFUL defence mechanism? (Provided the fear is not falsely put there to manipulate people.... but if it is a natural fear is might be good.)
I mean, I remember as a child that I was afraid of things like witchcraft, etc. I wasn't taught to be afraid of it in my religion. As a child, things like that just never came up at church (it was all about knowing that I am a child of God, and that he loves me, and wants me to choose the right way, and be happy). Nowadays, I think I'm pretty aware of the nature of witchcraft, it's good and bad, how it affects people, etc. I'm not scared of it.
Maybe we are afraid of what we can't understand when it is something that is just too hard for us to comprehend AT THIS TIME. Some things should be left alone until the time is right.
The time becomes "right" to learn something, when we are sufficiently developed in our understanding to research without losing faith. Faith is a very important internal attribute! Faith is what keeps us seeking for more and more answers. Faith is what enables us to step out of our comfort zones and do things we've never tried before. Keeping the faith, and learning "line upon line, precept upon precept, here a little and there a little" is important to our spiritual welfare.
So I think it is not really something we should judge in another person, if they are "afraid of what they can't see". We need to be gentle, and teach them little bits that they can accept and understand in their current state, without us feeling condescending about it (because we're all in the same boat, brother). Gradually, people's minds become opened, without there being any damage to their faith at all, but rather, causing an increase in faith.
Oh, yeah... also, when we attempt to see another person's point of view, in order to know which little pieces of information to offer them first, we actually discover much that we didn't actually know! Amazing!
Love to all. xo

Gee, I think that one goes back to when the cavemen were all sitting around the campfire, with no idea what was taking place outside their circle of thier light. They could hear noises, and rustles, but couldn't really see what was going on...was it one of thier tribe coming back from a visit to a tree, or something much more vicious that might eat them? When you can't see something, you feel vulnerable, like it is beyond your ability to control it, and until you can see it (or otherwise understand it), you don't know how to deal with it, whether to shake it's hand, or shoot it......

B'coz they are not sure of what lays ahead & can't prepare themselves accordingly.Like those who fear the dark actually fear that which lays beneath the darkness waiting for them.
But this can be fought with by trying to know the unknown.

Fear is often being afraid of the unseen. Faith (trust in God) assurance of things unseen (Heb. 11:1).
So; do people fear or have faith, about the unseen? That is a piece for each person to decide for themself at that time!!!

A lot of it has to do with the information others might have given them on their perceptions of the "nature" of whatever it is, and if they can't chew the information over themselves and come to a logical conclusion if such info is correct/valid or not, then they might continue to fear. Humans are humans...

Some people thing with a scientific mind and if it cant be proven with one of our five sences then it does not exist to them. People fear what they do not understand, not what they cant see.

in our history of the human race we passed through of phase of exploration of our environment... before we understood things we were afraid and it caused superstitions... but before we could discover the causes of our fears someone came along and used superstitions against us... we should have evolved beyond this in our development by now... but something in our cultures prevent us from doing it... holding us back through superstitions... it's called religion

They are afraid of the unknown! Only when the known gets so depressing or hostile will they venture forth past the sign that reads: Beyond this point Dragons Dwell! Thanks for this question. ~ : )
