I have been Catholic for 10 years now, converting from Protestantism. I am having trouble believing the Doctrine of Original Sin although I accept it. Maybe I just don't understand it. St. Augustine's writings are difficult for me. I researched this in the Catechism but can't find much to help me.

Please write me something helpful. Thank You, Ann

Here is one way to describe Original sin.

The paradise in which God created the human race was a place where all people lived in complete holiness. They loved God with all their heart, with all their soul, and with all their mind. They loved their neighbors as much as they loved themselves.

Then the first human beings disobeyed the commandment of God, choosing to follow their own will rather than God's will. This was the Original Sin.

As a consequence the first human beings lost the grace of original holiness, and became subject to the law of death; sin became universally present in the world.

Besides the personal sin of the first human beings, original sin describes the fallen state of human nature which affects every person born into the world. Therefore we are not responsible for Original sin but we are affected by it.

It was this fallen state from which Christ, the "new Adam," came to redeem us. Jesus makes paradise available to us again and teaches us how to live there, "You shall love the Lord, your God, with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind. You shall love your neighbor as yourself."

With love in Christ.

My own personal opinion is that the sin lies in the fact adam and eve chose to "not take Gods word for it",they chose to believe someone else instead.
God did everything for them and they couldnt do this one thing for God.

When parents baptise their child they are saying they will believe God and not someone else, thereby absolving the origional sin.

How this ties in with real world history is tough to crack,
Man did come from the ground as any evolutionist can atest to.
An antropoligist could argue that noahs flood was a euphonism for the extinction of the neandertals, and so on.

The bible account of the creation is a truthful account of the worlds creation even if its explained in non-scientific terms.

Nobody knows what Gods involvement with man was around 30000 years ago so its impossible to guess what really happaned.
God has been truthful so far.

I'm Catholic, and I was always taught that Original sin was disobedience. Adam and Eve were disobedient to God by eating from the Tree of Knowledge. It was that sin of disobedience that follows us. After all, what is sin? It is when we willingly disobey God.

As for an actual doctrine, I think it might be in the Catechism.

Original sin was the sin of Adam and Eve - humanity.

"Original sin, from the Augustinian perspective, is not a free and individual choice by a baby; but rather the effect of the sum total of "world sin", taught analogously through the story of the sin of Adam and Eve. The Augustinian doctrine of original sin teaches that every individual is born into a broken world where sin is already active; that they are inevitably influenced personally by the actions of others and the consequences of choices made by others. The Augustinian effectively believes that human nature—and hence every individual person—is flawed. The Augustinian remedy for original sin is baptism; the ritual washing away of the unchosen but inevitable condition of birth sin; and a vigorous declaration by Christians that sin shall not prevail, but that God's grace can overpower it with our free cooperation."

This is not according to any Catholic doctrine.

However, it is explaining the doctrine of original sin scripturally so that you may follow with your own Bible.

As far as I know, I'm 14, future priest, Orignal Sin is with everybody. You must be baptized to go to Heaven BUT if you die before getting baptized before the Age of Understanding (what sin is) or if you never heard of Christ and you live a good life you are hoped to go to Heaven. Since we cannot know for sure if an unbaptized goes to Heaven we can hope they do. Private message me if you have any questions. :D

It is the sin of Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit. Original Sin is not in the Bible. I personally do not believe we were born with Original Sin.

It's pretty simple. Adam & Eve sinned and God blamed all their descendants until He got even by having Jesus executed.

No, it doesn't make sense but you'll go to hell if you don't believe it.
