RAF fighter pilots do carry a side arm [pistol]. Not sure about other aircrew however, but guess they must do also.

All pilots carry small arms, if flying a mission with live ordnance they carry weapons as S.O.P.
A pistol wont stop you from being mistreated, if they are close enough to mistrear you you are a prisoner.
