RAF fighter pilots do carry a side arm [pistol]. Not sure about other aircrew however, but guess they must do also.

The Irish Defence rigidity have an entire capability of only approximately 20,000 through fact they're a tiny u . s . with a small inhabitants and minimum militia duties remote places - for this reason a small armed rigidity. the united kingdom is a critically greater u . s ., with extra desirable than 13 cases the inhabitants of eire, and distinctive remote places territories to guard and a extra physically powerful risk to intrude in international affairs. And sure, the British defense force are already downsizing besides - they're finding at decreaing the universal forces and increasing the reserve/territorial forces. do no longer enable the term "Defence rigidity" fool you - even the Irish Defence Forces contain themselves in peacekeeping operations remote places, mutually as the Australian and New Zealand Defence Forces are modelled on the British defense force and have deployed troops to combat remote places alongside allies over the a protracted time.

Yes,
A pistol is not much use in the situation you are talking about. I believe that the MoD are looking at something with a little more stopping power should a pilot be forced to land in enemy territory.

Its standard policy for most airforce pilots. The pilots downed over Iraq before the war kicked off for real carried small arms although in their case they were captured and badly treated.

All pilots carry small arms, if flying a mission with live ordnance they carry weapons as S.O.P.

A pistol wont stop you from being mistreated, if they are close enough to mistrear you you are a prisoner.
